Now that the M8 is double balanced the MOCO can take advantage of the "speaker"-type knock sensor which is much easier to tweek for sensitivity than the ion system which is first and foremost, not very well publically documented.
It definetly needs some help as I notice some light detonation on heavy, higher gear, acceleration.
Since we already can turn knock sensing on and off hopefully we will be able to adjust sensitivity as necessary.

Run 91-93 Straight gas or 10% blend No ping issues. I have the RGU so uses coolant rather than oil cooled top end. No leaks. I never had any leaks on the 2016 either.
Well I guess you may be right in a very rigid definition of the word. However in a practical sense one would not ask to purchase a microphone from the local Harley dealer nor ask for a knock sensor at the corner music store. I suspect that one would be a very poor substitute for the other hence the reason for each having a different name. In any event the device in question's sole purpose is to sense knock. So let's just call a horse a horse and not confuse people.
It's not a rigid definition. It's was a loose one so that people should get an idea as to what it does. It's very application specific type of microphone. Sorry the discussion confused you..
A couple notes concerning pinging (detonation)....and observed mileage...
Rider (and passenger) weight, aero mods (windscreen & wind speed and direction), road surface, engine mods, exhaust choice, tune, tire pressure, belt tension, primary chain tension, brake pad drag (F&R), along with the way the bike is ridden all have real world effects on fuel mileage AND detonation (ping or knock) observation, not to mention the variable methods folks use to calculate their mileage.
I've heard folks say they get XX mpg by noticing when their idiot (low fuel) light comes on and how many miles they noted....and those like most of us who try to be somewhat accurate with at least the miles ridden vs fuel topped off comparisons.
Then there are those who are much more scientific than the masses...
They meticulously record every trip, mpg for every mile, logging variables like tire pressure, weather during the ride, along with 1up vs 2up riding, etc.
Anyone have those type records to offer?

Will the brand of oil you use make a difference? And where you put your gas cap when refueling? Have you removed your heel shifter? Sorry, couldn't resist.

Fosho! The synthetic oils are thinner and create less drag on the engine which will increase fuel mileage. If a gas cap is cheap and leaking it can cause fuel to evaporate. And removing the heel shifter reduces weight which will increase fuel mileage.
