Default Just picked up a 17 Road Glide Special - Tuning question

Hello all,

Just got the new bike and I am excited to start playing with it. I am just wondering if it is necessary to change the filter / breather? I was thinking about just changing the pipes and re tune it. Is that a bad idea? Im not sure if changing it is snake oil.

Thanks for any help,

Tom

I had S&S slip ons added when I bought the bike. Well a week later. NO tune needed for just slip ons.

Then after the break in period...or 1000 mile service, I added the SE breather and a tune is needed at that point.

Thanks for the reply!

Did you notice a difference after the breather and tune?

It ran like crap right after I installed the tune, but most likely my error. I reinstalled the canned SE map and did a couple auto tunes. Runs very well now!

I will say I get a lot more valve train noise from the more open breather. It doesnt seem as bad when I run the better, ethanol free gas in it.....sometimes I forget to go there for gas, and also now that the weather has cooled off it runs even better as well.

Next is a torque cam!

If I am understanding correctly, you are saying that the breather and tune are worth the investment?

One suggestion would be to ride it for a bit and see how it feels. You might find the new motor does all you need. Of course if it's just sound your after, you may only be able to get that with slip on's so that kinda settles it there. IMO- they run great as is, but its a personal thing only you can decide.

I keep this handy to share for when questions just like this come up in hopes it is helpful...for $1500 using all Harley SE parts and dyno tuned, keeping warranty intact this is what you can expect from a competent tuner..the red is with just the SE Stage 1 map from the SEPST and the blue is fine tuning it all with the same tuner..to answer your question..totally worth it imo because it made significant power and drivability improvements over stock....or just leave it stock and enjoy the hell out of it, you don't 'need' to do anything to enjoy a great running bike..I just prefer to open the flood gates so to speak a little over the more restrictive AC and exhaust..breathing better makes a happier engine...good luck

"Worth the investment" is all on how you look at it. Just like stix said, your bike will run very good bone stock. Me, I'm after more sound and not really a number chaser, but to get there...better sound.....the stage 1 for around 500 bucks was well worth it. If nothing else, your bike should run cooler and sound better. Plus its the first required step to later upgrades if you want more.

Again, for me its all about sound, which is why I want the stage 2 torque cam at some point.

I rode both bone stock and one with a stage 1 before I purchased. I could definitely tell the difference between the two in both performance and sound. Although I ordered mine with the stage 1, I soon moved to stage II - personal choice. As mj indicated, the bike runs like a champ right out of the box, so no "need" to do anything to it. But if you're anything like me, I can't leave well enough alone.

Also, just my opinion, but after running the SE Street Cannon's for about 1500 miles, I went with the Rinehart 4.5's, and absolutely love them. Again, a personal choice thing. Some folks love the Cannon's.

Enjoy your new ride!

Personally I didnt care for the SE cannons sound either. They had a bike with the RCX and one with the MK45's. I like the S&S's way better. But different pipe sounds are all personal preference.
