Yesterday while out riding with a couple of friends, I got on it hard and when I was in second gear the bike just completely lost power. It scared me at first as I thought something had broke, I upshifted and the bike took off like nothing was wrong. I'm thinking I just over revved it and hit the rev limiter, ( I glanced in the mirror to look at my buddy who was fading back quickly), and I'm sure I hit the redline before I realized it. After I upshifted and got back on the gas it ran perfectly fine. My bike is a 2017 SGS stage III with 21000 miles and I've never had a problem of any kind. I don't often run my bike hard but I do on occasion and this is definitely not the first time I have run it to redline through the gears. Occasionally you have to do it just because you can. Could this have been sumping or just my mistake in not shifting quick enough?

Do it again and watch the tach. With stage III, it should be around 6200. The rev limiter will only stop it from going past the set limit but it will run fine below that limit...usually it pops and farts at the limit.
I have hit the rev limiter before, but always in a higher gear and I got what you all described, the snap crackle, pop sound. This just felt like it hit a wall and slowed down. But then after I upshifted, I ran it to redline in 3rd, fourth , and fifth and it ran flawlessly. In most descriptions I've read about about sumping it didn't just immediately go away.

Curdog do you have some power parts and an aftermarket tune to eliminate the speed limiter? On a softail 5th would be would be 140 mph at 6k probably 6,200 on a touring model.
BTW we had a Black Mouth Cur dog. Loved that dog & breed.

I know I've hit the limiter at least a couple of times in the past, probably in 3rd or 4th, I know I've not hit 140 mph, 115 maybe. I have hunted mountain curs for years. Great dogs.
