some interesting stuff happening to me with auto/motorcycle insurance
anyway, i am trying to determine if i really need these
my medical insurance thru work is really pretty good although i have an hsa with high deductable. my kids are covered until they turn 26.
i carry comp and collision with about 250 deductable.
but i find those two just a bit confusing. its almost like if i have them on the cars then i am covered also on the bike, like i don't need to have it on both.

This is how my progressive rep explained it to me. Uninsured is just like medical insurance and acts just like having a primary insurance and a secondary. In the event of an accident your uninsured would act like your primary and your medical insurance would pick up the remainder...now here is what most peole do not understand. Uninsured will ONLY cover you IF the accident was NOT YOUR fault...and as you probably already know it can be VERY expensive to carry this. I was told to call my medical insurance...BC/BS and ask them would I be covered in the event of an accident...yes!. I have great benefits and decided not to carry this insurance. I don't beleive you are covered on your bike just because you have them on your car. I think they work differently. Hope this helps. If you have a good rep who knows his/her info they should be able to explain this to you. I'm not sure why they call it uninsured...it makes it sound like this covers you in the event of a cager having no auto ins....however, this is not the case. I guess with so many people not being able to afford medical insurance you can carry this. I guess I forgot to mention this is Motorcycle insurance we are talking and not auto
Uninsured motorist coverage covers you if you are in an auto accident with someone who does not have insurance and you are seriously injured due to the other driver's negligence you can collect from YOUR insurance company up to the limits of your uninsured liability. Underinsured is the same thing except it pays the difference if the other driver has low limits of liabilty. For example, you are seriously injured in an auto accident and you sue. The other driver only has 20/40 liability which pays a maximum of $20,000 per person, maximum $40,000 per accident. You have $500,000 underinsured motorist on your motorcycle policy so you sue and win a $750,000 judgement against the other driver. His insurance company gives you a check for $20,000, your insurance company gives you a check for $480,000 (limit of liability minus the 20 grand from his insurance company) and the driver is liable for the balance. UM and UNDRM is inexpensive and I highly recommend you purchase the highest limits allowed by your insurance company because of the high possibility of being injured or killed riding a motorcycle.

Completely wrong. Was the Progressive rep taking a guess? The proceeds can be used for any purpose but it is not medical coverage and there has to be negligence by the other driver. I'm a licensed insurance agent in the state of Michigan. It would be the same as if you sued the other driver, he does not have insurance or low limits of liability and win a judgement. Your own insurance company pays the judgement up to the limits of UM or UNDRM of your own policy. Your medical coverage, whatever the limits are, is in addition to this. In most cases, if the injuries are serious enough, your insurance company will give the money to you without actually sueing.
In Michigan, if you are hit by a car and left on the side of the road to die, you can collect the limits of your uninsured motorist liability limits. This isn't true in all states, but I can't emphasize enough, if you ride a motorcycle purchase the highest limits of UM and UNDM liability you can. Progressive offers half million limits on each and that's what I have.
this is why i am asking - seems just a bit confusing to me. and you notice how i am getting some different info in just 4 responses.
yes i have talked to my agent about it.
i have read the policy.
i have googled.
and then i went back and did all 3 again and again.
i am concerned about the bodily injury part. obviously, material things can be replace, and i do have comp/coll so the property damage part of the uninsured coverage.
it seems like this will cover me if i am in an accident period, even if i am not driving the motorcycle or even driving one of my own vehicles. it doesn't even state that i have to be in a vehicle. it only states that i (or any insured person as defined) was injured by a vehicle. i could be crossing a sidewalk and hit by a car. i could be driving your car and get hit by a vehicle. or - this i am guessing - that i could be driving my own car, which doesn't have this type of coverage - get hit by somebody in a vehicle - and my insurance from the motorcycle with this type of coverage would pay. and because of the definition of insured person being a relative, and again it does not say they had to be named in the policy, my mother is covered
in my policy book from progressive it says
if you pay the premium for this coverage, we ill pay for damages than insured person is legally entirled to recover from the owner or operator of an uninsured motor behicle or underinsured motor vehicle because to bodily injury:
1. sustained by an insured person
2. caused by an accident
3 arison out of the ownership, maintenance, or use of an uninsured motor vehicl or underinsured motor vehicle
and it goes on to define insured person as:
a. you or a relitive
b. any person while operating a covered motorcycle with the permission of you or a relative
c. any person occupying, but not operating, a covered motorcycle
d. any person who is entitled to recover damages covered in part III because of bodily injury sustained by a person described in a, b, or c above.
Please disregard my insurance info...I do not want to pass along wrong info to anyone. I would recommend you contact your insurance rep. since all states are different in what is required you have on your motorcycle....heck in the state of Florida you are not even required to have motorcycle insurance....which is just plain stupid to me. I tried to delete my post, but I am unable to do so...so just ignore.
yep, actually read that over before i posted this stuff. the quotes in there are from an insurance type. there were a lot of should, maybe, might, etc.
and i guess i am also asking what will also be covered by other insurance. kinda like if i have medical, then should i get the medical in the motorcycle policy also. what are the advantabes. for the medical one, i think it pays for medical stuff with no deductable. so like if i have 4k worth of injury and my work plan has a 4k deductable then i pay everything, but if i have 4k with the motorcycle policy, then it all gets paid for.
that is kinda like the stuff i am looking for.
