Default Is my Jagg cooler thermostat working?

Hi! I just installed a slimline cooler/thermostat adapter on a '99 Harley Road King. I rode it about 15 miles in cool weather (low 60's, cloudy) at 50mph-60mph. After the ride, the filter was warm to the touch as usual but the cooler and the cooler rows were still cool to the touch. Is it possible that the low ambient temperature didn't let the oil get hot enough to open the thermostat, or should the oil gotten hot enough at that point?

Thanks!

Carl

Sounds fine to me, the thermostat should only open above a certain oil temp. Hopefully you'll get a hotter day before long and can try it out in conditions when it does wake up and shows that it works!

Oil cooler thermostats typically open at 185 deg. I doubt you hit 185 degs. in 15 miles with temps in the 60s.

Unless you are running in an extremely cold environment, why install a thermostat? At one point, Jagg's FAQ page indicated thermostats are not really necessary, and they make them mainly to satisfy customer demand. Today it's worded a little more carefully.

Do I need an oil cooler? Only if your motorcycle gets hot.

Do I need a thermostat? If you wish for your oil to bypass the oil cooler until engine oil temperatures reach circa 190şF, then choose a thermostat.

The kit comes with the oil filter/oil line adapters and it includes a built-in thermostat. Being in Southern/Central California I probably wouldn't have ADDED a thermostat but in this case it is part of the overall package.

Here in the UK it's more like November than 'flaming June'! All you need is a hot day to check your thermostat - then send some heat over here please!

It takes a good 20-25 mile ride for my thermostat (165*) to open when it's 60* out. Take it for a bit longer ride and the cooler should be getting warm.
