Default A different oil filter test

An interesting video I ran across today (Not Mine). He tests the filters with a UV luminescent (dirt) and then uses the UV light to see how much was filtered out.
These are filters for a BMW motorcycle.

I found the reusable SS filter test interesting.

Default Luminescent oil filter test

Yes the re-usable oil filter allowed the 20 - 25 micron size particles through. But it also had one of the best ratings to not allow bypass. I recall a lot of the paper filter manufacturers state that they filter down to 10 - 15 micron range. Given that the test particles were larger than the paper filter micron rating, why weren't more of the particles trapped out when squeezed through the filter. It would appear that the bypass valves on many allowed no filtration. So how hot and thin does your typical oil have to get before the by-pass valve seat and filtration begins ? Me, I use the Flow type re-usable filter. I would rather have 20-25 and up micron particles filtered out right away or sooner in the engine start cycle, than have by-pass occurring over a longer period of time till the oil warms and the by-pass valve seats. 2cents.

Additionally it's important to remember the way the particle size filtration is rated for the re-usable vs disposable filters. The re-usable filter has an absolute rating. Nothing bigger than 35 microns (in the case of the PC Racing Flo filter) gets past unless in bypass. Most disposable filters give us best case, meaning that yes they will filter down to 10 or 15 microns, but they also let larger, up to 80 or 90 microns in most cases, particles through. So one needs to ask themselves, is it better to have more 15 to 35 micron particles floating around, or know you have much larger particles potentially getting through? It is important, as well, to remember that as more and more 15 to 35 micron particles are being trapped, those 90 micron holes are seeing more and more flow. I am NOT saying one is necessarily better than the other, only that there is a counter point. These tests, IMO, would be far more accurate to show the results after an emulated 2500 and 5000 miles. A brand new filter is not brand new for very long. What happens as the filter loads up?

One feature of the re-usable type I really like is that I can see what is being filtered out, so if I happen to see chunks, I know something is not happy (not that I have yet thank God). There is a magnet in there as well to help trap any ferrous metals in the mix.

Good info. I installed one of the PC Racing units last year, this past weekend was my first oil change. It was nice seeing a lack of debris for piece of mind as well as easy cleanup. Not cheap at $100 but its worth it for my sleep.

I work on jet engines. The one I work on has two metal screen type filters, very similar to the ones sold for Harley’s. These filters are in line with the oil tank and the pump. Want to know what filter is used after the oil goes through the engine and back to the tank? Yup, a synthetic paper type 3 micron scavenge filter. Why? Because it filters better than the metal screen type, which was basically designed to strain out larger metal particles and allowing maximum flow.

I worked on jet engines (military) for over 44 years (36 years in experimental shop for one of the big 3 jet engine manufacturers).

I never saw a paper filter on a jet engine...

Question Jet Engine versus Internal Combustion Engine ?

Just for the sake of curiosity and entertainment, I view some Forum topics. I always seem to learn something is why I like HDForums.

Just to add a question... How do Jet Engines and Internal Combustion Engines differ in their use and purpose of oil for lubrication? This is an Apples to Oranges comparison is it not?

Reading oil related threads and oil filter threads here in the Forums, I see folks talking about "microns" and particles that are suspended in oil circulating within the Engine. They talk about the Oil Filter By-pass valve and unfiltered oil. Well, has not the oil going through the By-pass valve already been filtered? The purpose of an oil filter is, to do its best to filter out "microns" of foreign particles suspended within the oil circulating within the Engine. Right? I'm just asking questions here, I don't claim expertise in any area.

Well, being curious like I am sometimes, I got to thinking, how big is a Micron? So, I researched that a bit. Here's a link describing the size of a Micron.
I hope you enjoy the video, I did. I believe it's helpful.

I'm gonna sleep better tonight knowing my oil filter is one less thing I need to worry about. Since I change my engine oil every 3000 miles, I'm more concerned about what type of oil my Bike likes best, rather than the oil filter I use. I'm not disagreeing with anyone's choice of oils or oil filters. I'm just adding to the conversation.
