"04 Harley Sporster 1200 in Texas just got bike and pushed past 1000 miles, so book says first oil change is due. what type of oil and filter recommended. daily driver, but only 3 miles to work
If you watch this forum you will see that not many folks are happy with Harley Syn3, I know I wasn't. Most use a high quality Synthetic like AMSOIL MCV 20/50 or Mobil 1 V Twin 20/50 Others like Redline. They are all good choices. Even Syn3 is ok, Made my motor sound real noisey.
If you would like AMSOIL, I can help you with that. Email me.
Agree on the filter OR Pure One filter OR K&N OR Amsoil, etc.
Buy syn III ONLY if you want to pay the most for the least impressive syn.Of course, Citgo andEl Presidente de Venezuela will appreciate your business!
Mobil one 15/50 would be cheapest and easiest better choice or, the high priced speads Amsoil OR Redline oils.
The HD 360 Dino might be a good choice if you plan to change it very often because of your low milage daily trips.
EZ (lots of threads here to educate yourself but , almost all agree that Syn III is NOT a good buy for the money.

I use Amsoil in mine but sometimes that's hard for some to find itclose to them. You can order it online but then you have to pay for shipping and that turns others away. I myself wouldn'tbuy Syn 3 and I prob wouldn't use it even if it were free.[:'(] But hey that's just me. I want the best protection for my motor. Mobile 1 is usually easy to find, andyou can use the car 20/50 no worries. If it were me and I couldn't get Amsoil easy, I'd go to Pep Boys and pick up 4 quarts (or how ever many you need)of Royal Purple 20/50 for $6.99 a qt and there you go.
I know you have had the bike for only a month or so and have added 500+ miles in that time but do yourself and the bike a favor and get up early and ride the long way to work and back, say 15 + miles each way. The oil and filter issues were well covered above.
Enjoy the ride,
FBL

I agree with most on here...Used what you like. I used to run SYN 3 in all 3 holes but switch over and was really surpprised at the results. I use Mobil V Twin (got it at Wal-Mart- $8.23 qt), Mobil 1 75W/90 Syn gear oi for the tranny and H-D Fomula + for the primary...if you read this forum you will see and learn that everybody has diffrent combs and oils they swear by so with that said..read a little and used what you feel comfable with. If you do like it you can change it out next time you change the fuilds
Good luck and you really can't go wrong using any top oil and filter
