We went riding yesterday it was cold and cloudy. We rode about 140 miles. My question is twice when we stopped I had oil coming from my breather. It was not a bunch, maybe less than a teaspoon. It would blow back onto my exhaust and oil tank. Anyone ever experenced this or know what the problem could be? Thanks for all your help.
Pretty common problem, it's the engine oil venting system to the breather, there's been much disscussion on this for cure's and fix's to lessen the amount or catch the excess. One fix link below, do a search and you should find many topics on this.
It is pretty common if you have a Screaming Eagle Air Cleaner. I just put a minipad in the bottom of the chrome air breather cover to catch the oil and change it when it gets saturated. The problem is usually intermittent, and more of an annoyance than a real problem.
I have the same problem when making long runs at higher speeds...I get a fine mist all over the oil tank on the right side. Pain in the *** but normal, especially with the SE or other aftermarket air cleaner.
If the oil level is too high it will exhibit this symptom. The vent hose check is my second choice as they do get very brittle. And third would be the position of the hoses in the intake track, they should be well into the tract and the angel cut should be pointing directly into it.
On my 05 RG oil on the stick half way, cold, on side stand. Any higher and it used to moisten the K&N as I ran the SE open element.
Since, I have put a Doherety Power Pack on and I don't vent into the intake any longer but into the vents, with open bottoms, and no drips at all.
I have the same problem with the SE air filter. Cut a sponge in half and RTVd it to the bottom of the air cleaner. Seemed to help so far. Talked to my mechanic about it and he said HD is aware of the problem and came out with a new back plate for the SE air cleaner. (kinda pissed me off since mines less then a year old). The parts guy said he just tee'd the two lines together plugged the backplate holes and ran the line down under the frame where if blows out harmlessly (sorry EPA)
Thats my next move if the sponge thing doesn't last long enough.
One thing that I have found on my bike is that I cannot have it to the full line. If I keep it in the middle I can make 6800 rpm runs and no puking. I do use a vent to the ground. As for the mist pretty normal , I dislike the mist as I run a open element, so I went to the vent hose to the ground. There are a few tricks you can try. but most times you are still going to get it, really it means that it is working. THe vent kit is cehap some times very cheap depending on what type of head cross over you have.
