Default Purchased Cool Collar

Saw one of them cool collar oil filter heat sink setup for twin cams for sale on e-bay and thought "why not"?!? Looks nice (polished billet aluminum) on the bike and it's a slip fit over the oil filter. Have no freakin' idea if it does what it claims but I'm sure there is some oil temp drop; can't hurt a bit. Figured I'd try it before I went to the Harley 'supercooler'.

Anybody else using one of these in hotter climates? I didn't feel the need to run any kind of cooler on my 'ol SHovel or EVO with oil bags but the Dyna Twin Cam engine with the integrated oil pan and a bit less oil circulating in the system runs hotter for sure. My leg-o-meter don't lie!

I thought as you do. I got one last year. Can't say for sure works. I just install it in the heat of summer and it sits on top of the toolbox the rest of the year. What the heck!!

I wouldn't waste my money on one. It's a heat sink, not a cooler. In order for it to work, it must be in direct contact with whatever it's supposed to be cooling. When you slide that over the oil filter, there's an air gap around most of the filter. The air gap acts like an insulater, and prevents the transfer of heat. That's how your double pane windows work. That makes it extremly inefficient. You would need some kind of thermal transfer grease/fluid for it to be even mildly effective.

Try this. Put on the "cooler", and ride around for a while. Let the oil get nice and hot. Now put your hand on the "cooler" and feel how warm it is. Quickly remove it, and lay your hand directly on the filter. You'll notice how much hotter the filter is. That's because the heat gets trapped in the filter and the oil.

But they do look nice.
