Yesterday, I did the first transmission oil change after putting in Redline Shockproof Heavy and I have to say I was pleased with the results. I'm not sure I can say the bike shifts any better, but the magnetic drain plug had almost no metal and what was there was just very fine dust. I'm no scientist, but to me, that equates to less gear wear. It was a 3,700 mile run on the oil.
I have heard a lot of praise for the Red Line Shock Proof Heavy gear oil. Has anyone used the Red Line 20W50 oil, and is it also good for the primary? Getting ready to check out syn to see what all the hubbub is about. Also, whats wrong with Syn 3? I have read that several people do not like it. Why? One last one. Has anyone used Castrol V-Twin synthetic and why is it 12 bucks a quart?

Haven't tried it, but have read several good things about the Red Line 20w-50. Personally, I don't like something as heavy as a 50 for the primary. Clutch on my bike seemed "heavier" when I ran some 20w-50. Personal preference, FWIW.
It ain't that Syn 3 is a lousy oil, just that there are better oils available for less cash. Hate payin' that HD tax! Syn 3 is now a mix of hydrocracked (Group 3) and PAO (Group 4) oils.
Haven't used the Castrol V-twin stuff. I have used their Syntec car oil in my bike with good results. The car version is Group 3 hydrocracked, which some don't feel is truly synthetic. Don't know if the mc oil is Group 3 or 4, but I wouldn't pay $12/qt for any oil.
