Default Full syn or mix with dino oil?

I had a buddy of mine give me 2 qts of Redline 50wt oil. He said mix it with a qt of 50wt dino oil or 2 qts of 50wt dino to 1 qt of the syn to quite down the motor a bit. Can this be done? I know about the temps with the straight weight oils. Just looking for some input. Thanks.

Give it back. Just run one or the other and if noise is a concern just run straight VR1 20/50 or 50. Forget that mixing crap.

It's okay to mix any oil. There's really no magic as it relates to synthetic oil. It's still oil. it's just refined a bit differently. The "synthetic" title is somewhat misleading.
In any event, your ride will run fine if you choose to mix oils.

Yep, as matter of fact its a selling point for Redline. I mix 1 qt of 20x60w Redline with 2 qts of Castrol 20x50w Dino oil. Runs quieter and I still change every 4000 miles. No problems.

50 weight oil is really only suitable for riding in hot conditions, which you should find mentioned in your owners manual. If your weather at present matches those conditions, then use it as it is and top it up if necessary with whatever engine oil you have lying around. If not, then use a 20/50 oil until it does. If it never gets that hot, then use it up by adding half a quart to a suitable 20/50.

There is more folklore surrounding oils and Harleys than is healthy! Avoid getting into discussions about the darned stuff and use a big helping of common sense.

^^^Best advice ever!^^^

Oil threads are about as opinionated as political threads so use your head and mix according to your conditions.

I don't know why it is, but when I ran fully synthetic base gaskets leaked. Went to dino and no problems. I change oil religiously so no factor there. my .02.

Warm weather (riding season), your 20W50 will be running as the 50W anyway.
Going to a straight 50W would lose the times the bike could take advantage of lighter weight oil. (20W50) Starting/spring/fall mornings/etc....
Wouldn't you rather be able to buy 20W50 oil if needed while traveling instead of running home to get some of your home-brew oil?
