The lock on the beer box looks like it would take the same briggs and stratton key for the ignition

Found a locksmith just about 1o miles from ny house. Hez been in the business for over 50 years. First time I ever heard of him tho (and I been in this town since '62). Used the internet search on 10 best locksmiths in San Jose. He was the 3rd person I called. First two only do household stuff. Soon as I mentioned motorcycle he said bring it on down and I think we have what you need.. Showed him the Chicago key that is used for the bags on my 84 FLH. It fits perfectly in the the lock but doesn't turn because it is nit the same key number. Took him all of two minutes to find the correct key blank (#292) and a couple more to make me up two keys. Having the key number made it a very easy task. I am going to go back to him for an extra set of door lock and ignition lock keys for my 64 El Camino. When I go back I will take a pic of the display case he has. Probably hasn't been opened in a very long time. He has some really really old locks, latches and door *****. When I saw the ***** my first thought was shift ***** (not that I need anymore; think I am up to eight now). Not even sure he would be willing to part with them but I may still ask.

You definitely do not always get what you pay for....

Been unable to find the interior parts (seat, back cushion, side cushion) for the hack. Was directed to a guy on the flea that supposedly has some decent repo interior stuff

There were also some pics of the backside with "staples" not tacs like hellownewmans original. Obviously pleated and piping is not correct but I figured I could live with it for a bit until I find the correct seat material and then have it recovered. Guy supposedly does car interior work as well. Has very good ratings on the flea. So I spring for the deal and spend the money.

When the stuff arrives, I look at the backside cuz I figure on adding the trunk lock that Paul forund for me.

I carfefully pull back the staples. There were five wood screws on the left and three on the right. The wood looked someone used a carving knife to cut and shape it. There is no way can I install the trunk lock with that mess.

But wait...it gets worse. He used a thin piece of foam over the top and sides and then used some foam squares that were just thrown in as an afterthought. Under the back cushion between the spring and cover was a very thin piece of cotton batting (no pic of that).

Don't think it can get wose? Well it does. If you look at the top of the seat spring frame you will see that the curve of the right is much larger than the curve on the left. The seat will not sit flat so that it can be bolted to the tub. The elongated curve on the right prevents that. Two other issues with the back cushion (not pictured). The top spring frame is canted to the right (about 3-5 degrees) and does not align with the spring frame bolted to the wood base. The bottom right side of the top fame is squared on the right side and rounded on the bottom left side.

Overall I could have gone to Tijauna and gotten better work. Neeless to say the seller did not get positive feedback from me. He messaged me about it. There was no way to send it back because I had partially taken it apart. I was very careful with my words (tried not come off as a jerk) but absolutey slammed him.

That said I do have a plan in the works (AKA Paul I have some more questions that are going to be headed your way). I'll post them up here to keep it in the same thread.

Found out that the interior material is the same as that used on the winter windshield. Just so happens that I have the remains of one that came with my 49 EL project. There is a guy in town that has been doing interior car restoration for at least 25 years now. All high end stuff. Seen his work, absolutely flawless. I will take the material to him and see if he has a source.

Here comes the request for hellowneman. I intend to make my own back cushion, seat frame and side panels. Necessity...the mother of invention, right?

Is the wood back cusion frame 1/2 inch plywood?

Need dimensions please. I am figuring that between the dimensions of #2 and #4 I should be able to get close the the correct angle for the peak as well as the overall height for the wooden frame. #1 should get me the exact width of the back cushion. I am thinking that the rough width of #3 should coincide with the center of the curve on the front of the spring frame brace.

#2

#4

These measurement should allow me to properly construct the top plate that will enclose the trunk lock. Paul your original locking mechanism is a bit thicker than the one I have but the bottom block (#7) I can adjust accordingly so that the latch, when activated with the key, is centered over the slot in the sidecar.

#5

#6

#7

Nominal width and length? I won't be able to duplicate the cover exactly but I can get it close. And it appears that those tacks are just your normal upholstery tacs?

Is the batting used to cover the side and top of the seat as well. The poorly made aftermarket one just has a thin piece of foam around it that was absolutely useless along with the few pieces of foam squares that were thrown in along the sides.

#8 should give me the overall uncompressed thickness of the back cushion. Having the approximate thickness of the batting should give me a close approximation on the overall density of the springs.

Length and width of seat cushion?

?? Is the wooden block used so that there is a rearward angle on the seat cushion as it sits inside the hack?

Finally, the look on our cat Molly when I told her I was going to ask Paul, once again, for a huge favor.

Its okay Molly I don't mind at all!

I laughed when I saw the seat you actually paid to have done. That's so bad all you can do is laugh!

I'll make measurements but a tracing of the side panels might be in order.

Thanks again Paul.

And yes a tracing would get me a more accurate measurement of the side panels
