Rings you will lose compression, there is a seal for the valve guide that might be leaking (allowing some oil to leak through the guide and into the cylinder). That would give you a bit of blue smoke through the exaust.

Reason: spelling
i had a shovel motor rebuilt with 500 miles on it,it started fouling out the front plug every other ride(really sucked because the electric start was out that summer)a valve seal was leaking..i had the head rebuilt at napa auto machine shop for $40,8 years later,it still runs great..one way or anouther the head has to come off,if a ring broke you will see marks in the cylinder..pull both, its not that hard, and you could be back togeather and running in a few days..
Hi 2 wheel,
3 rings on a piston, 2 top compression 3rd bottom is oil control. If it was a ring gone bad it would smoke all the time. Sounds like valve guides &/or seals, but if inning mistaken I don't think there's any seals in it. Its just a close tolerance fit valve to guide.
I'm running a set of those STD on mine was so sorry to hear they went out of business, made mine breath like a beast, smoke about 25' of rubber no problem.
Pans are easy rebuild, if you do take it apart may as well do both pistons and heads as this will make for an even keel when done. Kinda like missing grandmas pie filling just right. Found out long ago it doesn't pay to do 1/2 a job.
Good luck
Sounds like it isn't happening until you get down the road abit. You have an S&S pump which has more output than the stocker, you may be filling your pans faster than they can drain down causing more oil getting into the valve guides.Just a thought.
