Timer advance
I use the timing advance on my '53 FL
I retard so that I can start the bike without the kicker knocking my knee into the bar end
and when running can full advance when cruising for best economy
timing is set in between these extremes depending on needs...slightly retarding timing can give better torque ( 2 up , going up hill- or twisties).
my other '53 had the timer loose, and I'd retard to start and move to full advance once running.
driveability is MUCH better with adjustable timing.
puts the rider more in touch with what the machine is doing and what it needs
rather than a cable running through the bars, it is more like a steel wire, about.060" in diameter

I have the timing set per manual specs. I can advance or retard the timer manually, I just never have.
I have never had an issue with this bike kicking me back. Nothing like the Sportster I had for years. I think the reason is in part that I straddle the bike and kick it all the way down to the ground. The videos that I see of guys standing off to the side of the bike and giving it a half hearted kick partially through the travel, I can see why it would kick back.
Did I understand you to say that there is no outer cable, just the inner wire running though the bars? Not ever having it set up for the timer advance I haven't can't say but V Twin shows an outer casing and inner wire for both throttle and timer advance, just that the spiral is opposite for the timer.
