I saw baker transmissions in another thread and was reminded of their name.
So I went to their site to price a tranny, well I almost laid a golden turd when I saw their prices .. Now I'm not going to down them as their products look good, but damn the trans cost more than my bike!
So evil bay I went and I can pick one up with low miles cheaper, now my question is what year tranny's will fit the 01 fxfl?
Thank you... And I did search but wanted the quick and easy way, so I just asked.
Your bike is a five speed, but is not compatible with a later Harley 6-speed - they won't bolt up to your engine because the way TC88 and TC96 engine/trans fit together is quite different. So the short answer to your question is that few if any secondhand 6-speed trans are suitable. You may get lucky and find a secondhand TC88 trans that has been converted to 6-speed.
However, Harley sells a 6-speed OD conversion kit, which will fit your transmission casing, Baker make DD and OD kits (I have a DD kit), there may be other brands. It is cheaper to buy a kit rather than an entirely new transmission, as you are replacing the gears and shafts, but not the outer casings, covers etc. Hope that helps!
Baker will have a Christmas sale and, IIRC, offers 20% discounts on many parts. One of their six speeds reduced 20% is still expensive but that's the time to buy. Many have had success with the Ultima six speed; the complete trans goes for about $500 and the gear set for a bit less. Kirby (VeeTwin Performance), one of our forum sponsors runs an Ultima six speed in a built '02 touring model and swears by it.
Don't forget your forum member discount of 10%. The DD6 builders kit part number for your bike is a DD411P these fit 01-06 baggers. The OD6 builders kit part number is 414P2 and it fits 02-06 baggers.
