Default Shifter Problem

Been having occasional issues getting into 2nd. Check the play in the splined shaft that connects the two shifter linkages, it is loose. Loosen the rear bolt, slide the shaft over, tighten up, all is good. Then a few days or so later, same issue. I cannot seem to get it tight enough to not loosen. Replace the bolt on the rear linkage, didn't help. Wondering if I need to replace the linkage pieces, shaft or both?

In my experience, just the arm needs replacing.. Kind of a typical problem. The lever splines are softer than the shifter arm splines, hence the whop out of splines.
Downside is you need to remove inner primary to replace the arm, while apart take look at seals and replace as needed, also the shifter shaft seal, its behind the shift lever.
There is a small c-clip to remove and a washer then you can get to the seal.

As stated, it's typically the shift arm is loose on the splines. You can try an toss a AN style waster under the bolt. with a little grease and tighten until the arm stop wiggling on the shaft. It will take significant torque to get the bolt to squeeze the end of the arm around the shaft. If you still seam to have play, the arm needs replacing.

Check the back side of your inner primary. The later bikes should have an indentation in the inner primary which allows enough room to slide the old shift shaft off and the new one on.

Replaced the gear shift lever 33718-82B as well as putting new screws in the shift levers. Cleaned up the splines on the shaft, put some thread locker on both ends of the shaft, put the levers back on, cranked those bad boys down as tight as I could. Everything seems to be staying nice and tight now, no more missed shifts into 2nd gear.
