Default '02 Road King compensator question

I have a '02 Road King that has a 103 upgraded engine with cams. About a month ago I started hearing a grinding sound while the engine was on. I'm not sure when the upgrade was done on the bike. I've also heard kind of a clunking sound upon shutdown and have come to the conclusion the compensator is going out. I tore apart the top end and found enough carbon buildup to mine a small diamond along with a bent intake valve. I do know that from getting the head gaskets from my local dealer that they had to get the parts for a '13 Road King. I'm unsure if a comp would have come as part of the upgrade or not. Would it seem plausible that the '02 comp simply was not strong enough for the more powerful 103?

No compensator is. You would benefit from running a solid sprocket and changing the gearing..
Here's a good thread on that.

The comps in the 5 speeds are fine. I have seen the Belville springs crack occasionally but they have been in aftermarket comps. One was on a 131 ci motor. (144/146) I got roughly 55000 out of a comp on a 116 ci high compression motor.. Mild 103 with stock comp should go 100K.. Belville springs do break tho..

If running standard 103 pistons with bigger valves, it's possible for the valves to hit the pistons. They miss the valve cutaway.

You can rebuild the top end without touching the comp. Why not just do that first?

Leaving it together can make it easier to turn engine over, by spinning tire in 5th to find TDC.

Pulling the primary cover make it even easier to turn the crank with a 1 1/2 inch socket..

Last time I had the tranny out, and I kept getting the nut stuck from tightening it. Is it really worth pulling the cover off? Maybe it is just that much easier to spin. first time I did it I just spun the wheel. I agree it probably would be easier to turn the comp, if cover was off.

I am thinking I would repair the valve. Take it for a ride and see if he still thinks the comp is bad. Not duplicating any work here.

That's what I did. I cleaned the heads and piston tops and replaced the valves. Got everything installed and torqued. Started the engine and still had the same sound. I ordered a comp and when I went to replace it, I was able to spin it off without using a breaker bar. I guess it was loose. Either way, installed the comp I bought and torqued the nut. Runs great now.
