Primary/Transmission/Driveline/ClutchFind answers to general powertrain, primary and transmission. Have clutch issues and need suggestions? Post them here.
I have an 07 Road King 15K Miles, bone stock as far as i know in regards to the power train. Last Sunday I noticed it felt kinda weird when taking off from a stop. But figured its just me being **** retentive as usual. Went for a short ride to a friends, no noticeable issues on the highway, on my way home when under semi hard acceleration, it felt like my rear tire was spinning. However I knew it wasn't losing traction. Accelerated hard a few times and it feels like the clutch is slipping. Rode it easy home.
Should the clutch be slipping with only 15K on the bike?
Does this mean my clutch is bad, or just needs adjustment?
I bought it in September and don't know its past history.
Is it normal to have to adjust the clutch from time to time on these bikes?
I have a 2011 Dyna with 32K i have had for about 6 years and have never had a clutch slippage issue, and have never had to adjust it.
My clutch lever lets out all the way at the top as well.

I think it's pretty rare to have a clutch slipping with that mileage that low. Unless it's been stunt ridden, or adjusted poorly to begin with. Short answer is just adjust the clutch and see what happens. There's tons of videos and written instructions on how to do that. Do you have a Service Manual? Even if you don't that's a basic maintenance item. Depending on how they're ridden, adjustments can last tens of thousands of miles or very short periods.

You are supposed to do it every 5k miles. Anytime you have something weird, start with adjusting the clutch its easy. I doubt the clutch is bad at 15k miles, unless its had the **** beat out of it
I am pretty sure it is in the owners manual. But you should not own a harley without a factory service manual. A few little things will pay for it.
Older bikes you can find them used on ebay, mint condition. I bought parts and electric for my 07 last year, less than $50 each, with shipping

The wet clutch is huge and if properly adjusted and not abused it will last a lifetime. However, what you described sounds like yours has had some terrible abuse. And even by you now. Check it. Back off till you have a little play at the lever. Go in behind the derby cover and break lock and screw in too no play. Then back off 3/4 turn and relock holding screw with Allen wrench. If you have never adjusted a clutch, I have left out a lot of details. Not going to write a book here. See youtube.
Reset cable for 1/32 freeplay checking lock to lock with bars. If it's not burnt up, that will last a long long time. If it's still slipping, it needs a clutch..
Actually the 07 96 ci motor uses a 280 lb spring and stock plate count clutch.. The 05s and earlier used a 320 lb spring and the same clutch.. Any abuse and it can start slipping. The bike is 16 years old. plates can get hard. You can try to adjust the clutch but it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if it need new plates..
BTW measuring the thickness will likely show no wear..

Not to hijack the thread, but do you know what the springs are rated by the color mark on them? Mine's marked blue and is engraved 257 lb.
