I am thinking about getting a SE 6 speed but can't decide if I should or not. What would be the benefits of it and how far would it drop my cruising RPM at 70 MPH???
Not for sure, but I think I read somewhere 200-300 RPMs
I just bought an 05 with a 5 speed. I didn't want the 6 speed. I figured it was brand new design, already had 1 recall. Wasn't sure they had all the bugs out yet.
I think the 6 speed gear ratio between 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th would be spaced out a little better for riding around town, just seems like neither gear on my 5 speed is the right gear for just cruising through town at 30-40 MPH. Just my preference.
the screaming eagle six speed is different. the 1-5 ratios are the same as the 5 speed in the softails and the 6th gear is a.89 compared to a 1.0 5 th i believe. I just dont know if 2500 is worth the 6 speed. I think it would be great on long trips but dont know if i want to fork out the cash right now for one.
I just had a 6 speed and 3:37 gearing installed in my 05 CVO Electraglide. As I usually ride two up and pull a trailer often, I wanted the lower gearing for the first 5 gears and the 6th to get back my cruising rpm.
The difference between the stock 3:15 and the lower 3:37 is very noticable when twisting the wick.
3000 rpm with the stock gearing in 5th was about 73 mph. With the new gearing and in 6th it changed to about 78mph @ 3000 rpm.
I have the 6 speed in my Road King and love it. It is just like the 5 speed except when you run the freeway you can use the 6th gear. Drops rpms about 350 at 80mph. Gas mileage (hwy) went up also about 2 mpg. It is expensive but worth every penny to me. Will make my annual trek to Sturgis this year easier.
I love the 6 speed on the new Dyna. My recall was fixed before delivery and there is another issue with a bearing inspection every 15,000 miles but it's all paid by HD. I don't know how the 5 speed Dyna runs but I had a Sportster and it always felt like it was working too hard on the highway. This bike is just cruising at 70mph between 2500-3000 rpm. Very nice.
Be careful if you get an aftermarket 6 speed. I bought a Rev Tech 6 speed for my Heritage and and sorry I did. It shifts very hard. Even though I am promised a full refund for the kit I am out the $250 labor from the HD Dealership.
