Default trans/clutch help please.

I have an 05 softail deluxe. I went to go ridding today and when I went to shift my bike it would not shift right. When I first took off I noticed that my boot felt a lil tight under my shifter when I went to shift form 2nd to 3rd. When I went to down shift it would not down shift enless I shifted down then used my heal to raise the shifter up a bit . Sorry If this dont make sense =) Its hard to explain. I dont know alot about bikes im just learning. It will shift good if i use my hand to shift... But to do this i have to shift then pull the shifter up or down depending on if im up shifting or down shifting.

I put on drag bars the end of last summer so all my cables are still a little long. I was just getting ready to take it to the shop and have the new ones put one and to have my 1k mile tune up. I was told I needed to pay for the first one so I dont void my warrenty. The thing I am worried about now is if me ridding with the stock cables on the drag bars is what messed my bike up. I know they are too long but the are not kinked and my clutch always worked fine. Im no mechanic so im here trying to figure out if i messed it up or if something is just out of adjustment.

Any feedback would be great..... Thats if this makes sense to anyone

I'm not sure what the problem is, but I think it's safe to say that it has nothing to do with your clutch cable being a couple of inches too long. As long as it is adjusted correctly and it's not kinked, it won't work any differently than a clutch cable that's shorter (or longer).

Dirkdiggler69, I had exactly the same problem with my Fatboy and it was a very easy fix. Apparently, in very hot weather or heavy traffic, engine heat has been known to melt the grease that lubricates the spacer between the gear shift linkage and the foot shifter. Does this make sense? Anyway, all you have to do is take the spacer off, re-grease it and the problem goes away!
Hope it's that simple for you!

Ill give that a try and see if it helps. That could be the problem since the last day I rode it it was in a 4 hour thunderstorm. May grease got washed away. Im taking it in for the 1k tune up tomorrow ... so if that dont work Ill let the shop worry about it . Thanx for the input guys

Wow thank you crankshaft. I feel really stupid now but I would of never of even thought of that. Im no gear head but I I try to do all my own work... I learn as I go. My bike was always hard to get it into neutral, It would pop from first right past neutral to second.. and from second past again to first, It did that from day one. Now that I lubed that bad boy up it pops right into neutral and shifts better then it ever has. As rusted and nasty as that shaft was I dont think it ever had any grease on it from the day it was built. thanks again...this is a greta site.

Don't feel stupid about it, it's just one of those silly things that's so simple, nobody thinks it could be that easy. Always glad to be able to help.

It's not supposed to be greased. It will fail again.

Use Anti-seize. It will keep it nice and smooth for a long time.

And they can't void your warranty by you doing your own work.
