Default Alignment question

On my 99 Softail Custom, if I align the rear wheel by measuring from the center of the swingarm bolt, to the center of the axle, my belt runs up against the inner side of the pulley. If I adjust it so that the belt runs in the center, then I am off at most a 1/16" on the measurement from the swingarm bolt to the axle. My question is, which way should I use? Alignment by measuring, or alignment by where the belt runs in the center of the pulley? Thanks for any and all replys.

Align it so the belt is straight.
I've had a bunch of Softails and the rear wheel has never been exactly centered under the fender.

Thanks TW; That is what I did, as it just seemed logical to me. It isn't off more than a 1/32" to a 1/16". Drives just fine, and I like the belt in the center.
