Primary/Transmission/Driveline/ClutchFind answers to general powertrain, primary and transmission. Have clutch issues and need suggestions? Post them here.
Dont know about your model years , but on the older 5 speeds there was an adjustment on the outside of the trans itself, that made a internal trans adjustment , that helped with missing gears. Had nothing to do with clutch adj.
You need a shop manual.
Just read my shop manual for my 2000 FLSTC 5 speed. Shows NO internal adjustment like we had on the older 5 speeds. 86 through 90 had the adjustment , and probably more years also, Dont know just when they changed .
I don't have a new manual handy, but it sounds like you're looking for shifter pawl adjustment. It's real easy to do with the right tools, but a real kick in the nuts without them.
Do a search in the tech threads on "clutch adjustment" easy peasy. While you are in there might as well change the primary oil. Make sure you have a service manual and torque wrench & proper tools before you try. If you are not sure have the dealer do it. Also, before you do anything call the MoCo hot line and give them your vin number and see if your bike was subject to the trans recall. There was a false neutral & shifter dog issue that may be covered by warranty. They will know if your bike was subject to the recall and if the work was done.
Have a shop manual...I think someone else mentioned the shift pawl adjustment, unfortunately, this is not an option with my model. However, I do agree that the problem is probably not clutch related, but is instead related to poorly assembled, manufactured, or quick wearing parts inside the transmission. Unfortunately, the problem isn't severe enough to warrant a transmission rebuild, which, from what I gather in the shop manual, is what generally needs to happen to replace the shift pawl assembly.
I'm checking for the recalls now. I know I've got the battery recall, the false neutral recall was already done, but haven't heard about the dog gear recall until now.
New to the site, a friend of mine told me about it today, looks great from what i seen so far.
Anyways, i have a 2005 HD Superglide. When i shift from 1st to 2nd, the transmission will drop back into neutral. Seems to be worse at higher RPM's. I don't much experience workin on motorcycles, where should i start looking.
After you check out the things posted above, take a look at your foot and the relationship to the shifter pedal. You will notice that your foot travels more in the downward direction naturally than you can lift it upward. You may find that your foot just isn't lifting the shifter high enough because of your position on the bike. I found it is necessary to remove the shift arm and reposition it one or possible two splines lower so your foot can then lift it enough to operate correctly especially after riding for a few miles when your leg gets tired. Sometimes it's the simple things that get overlooked.
You know, that might be worth trying...but I did take that into consideration. Having said that, I don't recall it doing it when I am consciously shifting hard up to second, it has typically happened when I'm just riding around a corner. Thanks for posting a simple, cheap, and easy fix possibility to help rule out the expensive ones.
glide is right,,,, similar situation when my son was racing,,, he would complain he couldnt grab the next gear,,,, when upshifting your foot travels passed the spot then falls back down thus catching the next gear,,, his case,, the bootwas not allowing the shifter to come back down a bit,,
solution,, remove lever, reposition so the toe peg was a notch higher!!
Shifter position is not the problem. The damn bike will, on rare occasions, simply shift into to second, then immediately fall back to neutral. This is very annoying, made more so by the occasional nature of the problem. I find myself having to concentrate to shift when riding about town. I've also read that the inner primary bearing needs to be replaced every 15k miles!
I have come to the conclusion that the stock HD transmission is a poorly designed or assembled piece o' crap. Does anyone know of a good transmission replacement for a 2006 Dyna model with the six-speed?
Does anyone know if the original poster ever resolved his issue?
I am at my wits end, and not too excited about dropping another $1500 into a $15000 bike.
