Default Another shift help question

Hi all,

New to the site, a friend of mine told me about it today, looks great from what i seen so far.

Anyways, i have a 2005 HD Superglide. When i shift from 1st to 2nd, the transmission will drop back into neutral. Seems to be worse at higher RPM's. I don't much experience workin on motorcycles, where should i start looking.

Try letting off on the gas when shifting. I believe that is the way it is to be done.

I have tried that. I also find that i am having to hold the shifter up with my foot and letting out the clutch. Sometimes it will catch, sometimes not.

Try canging the oil, and adjusting the clutch. If that doesn't work, It might need a new clutch. I'm not the expert on this subject, just trying to help.

I have EXACTLY the same problem on my '06 Dyna Street Bob. Of course the dealer does not notice it, but I sure as heck do. If you locate the fix, let me know. Better yet, if there is anyone else who has experienced this problem and knows what's causing it so I can wrench on the right part, it would be greatly appreciated.

Oh yeah, and I just had all the fluids changed, so the tranmission fluid should not be an issue.

I'm leaning towards the shift linkage rod or a clutch adjust

SO, it looks like I'll be heading down to the dealer and demonstrating the problem, since if I can't get it fixed under warranty, I'll be screwed.

Cheers,

X

UPDATE #3: OK, after lurking around the threads for a while, I now realize that a clutch adjustment is a bit more involved than on my Triumph. I'll be adjusting the clutch prior to riding; if this solves the problem, I will post. First had to learn all about the EFI, now the clutch...I do seem to remember noticing this problem after the 5k service, so maybe the clutch adjustment's off...

Seems like the '05's had a recall for a transmission problem. Have you checked with the dealer? I think it had something to do with a "false neutral" issue.

Yes, the '05's and early '06's did have a "false neutral" problem, however, this is not a false neutral issue, this is an issue whereby the shift lever "jumps" back down to neutral either immediately after going into second, or before going into second gear at all.

I adjusted the clutch to where it seems to have a lot of freeplay (grabs about 1/2 inch away from the bar) and this seems to have alleviated the situation somewhat, but not completely.

It could have to do with the fact that I ride pretty hard and shift pretty hard and fast, but I don't think any motorcycle should jump out of second, or fail to go into second.

I'll ride with excessive freeplay for another few miles, then I'll try the other way. In other words, its either jumping out of second because the clutch stays open too long, or its never going into second properly because the clutch doesn't open enough. OR, it's the forks, drum, or spring(s).

Since no one seems to have any experience in troubleshooting this problem and because any problem a dealer cannot duplicate does not exist (man never landed on the moon theory of mechanical diagnostics), I'm flying somewhat blind hoping to diagnose it on my own.

Again, any help, advice, or experience would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

X

RESOLUTION (so far): It appears that my clutch was just out of adjustment. After going the other way with the clutch (basically, reading these forums and the manual and adjusting 'by the book' without considering any problems), I have yet to have the problem repeat itself.

So check your clutch, that appears to be the culprit with mine, and may very well be the issue with yours.

Cheers,

OK, mine still does it, though not as bad. It just will not stay in second gear on rare occasions.

Does anyone have any thoughts besides clutch adjustment?

Cheers,
