Primary/Transmission/Driveline/ClutchFind answers to general powertrain, primary and transmission. Have clutch issues and need suggestions? Post them here.
I had the same issue with my 07 Softail... pulled the trans, replaced the shift fork and 3rd gear dog ring; put it back together and same issue- jumping out of 3rd under power and grinding. Please let me know if replacing all the needle bearings cured the issue.
You didn't replace the gear that the dog ring mates with?
I didnt have 3rd or 4th gear at all; like it was going in neutral. No, didnt see anything wrong with the cogs or splines in 3rd gear or 4th gear or any other gears. Checked all needle bearings, etc. . the dog ring was totally blown apart. Was my first trans rebuild.
I figured replacing the dog ring that was in many pieces and the shift fork would fix it. It does go into 3rd, put pops out under power. no issues with 4th at all anymore.
So makes sense 3rd gear shouldve been replaced too. I do t like to assume... So i will rate it down again and see whats whAt... your probably right though. I originally called Baker about trying to buy just a 3rd gear... they dont. Any suggestions on where to get a stronger one besides Harley. Bike has a Drag commander, Pipes, Stage 2 Intake, 30/70t pulley swap- and doing burn outs dont help it. Any suggestions besides riding it like grannie?

Baker Grunge box.. A more bulletproof tranny.

But if you were doing burnouts, wouldn't you have blown 1st? Sounds like you like banging 3rd.

Reason: add:
1st gear burn outs- no issues. Its the half way through a traffic light; downshifting from 3rd to 2nd- moving burn out and then banging back to 3rd.
Yea I looked at Baker replacement gears... cant afford them as of now. Just rebuilt my Dads 76 Shovelhead from the ground up- I did all the work; even separated the crank cases. Then took crank to a machine shop and had it balanced. I did the rings, pistons, push rods, also I had to rewire the whole bike...
