Primary/Transmission/Driveline/ClutchFind answers to general powertrain, primary and transmission. Have clutch issues and need suggestions? Post them here.
hey guys. so my bike is all set, figure i would take it around the block to check it out before dyno... first gear good, 2nd gear good, 3rd gear... not good
3rd gear under load "spings' sounds like a gear skipping... before i go back in and rear off the primary, inner, pulley, and start to get into the trans. anyone have any sugestions or ideas what may cause this?
i am running lucas 75/90 in the trans for the first time, usually i run sever gear amsoil.. i know this has min affect just wanted to make sure you knew. ANY ideas or things i can check to narrow this issue down? oooh ya 4th gear pulls no problem.
has a baker in it... if it was the clutch it should slip though 1st and 2nd with higher load on it ya know... but i will double check the clutch on her as well
When mine started to slip it would only happen in third getting on the freeway. Just throwing it out there. Might spur some good technical diagnosis or something to eliminate.
really! i did adjust the clutch... when your slipped was there a grinding sound at all? kind of like a gear skipping? also when you had this issue did you replace the plates in the clutch! oh man that would be SO much better than the trans! it does sound like it is coming from the primary over the trans ya know... also the clutch sat open with no fluid for a good 2 weeks i am wondering if my clutch plates got too dry
It kinda sounded like the primary chain or trans gears were slapping or going load no load or acceleration deceleration. Hard to describe. Like if you jacked the rear up and grabbed the back tire in gear and rotated it back and forth in gear. How about primary chain adjuster? Auto?
ya that is alot like the sound i am getting! has an auto adjust on it... man i am starting to think i may be looking in the wrong spot! maybe it is the clutch slipping on me and not my trans...

Hope so. Let us know what you find out. Hate being left hanging when it gets figured out.
of course! one other thing... i wrote out a list of things i changed this winter wiht the mods... and the only thing trans/clutch i changed was the fluids... typically i run ATF in the primary, but this round i ran 20w50 lucas synthetic... i know on some of the clutch upgrade kits they say never to use a Synthetic and only use ATF or primary fluid... think the change in fluids could casue this? i know on tons of other bikes i have done fluid change on i usually use 20w50 no problem

You brout up something interesting. The prob with some materials in friction plates is they are mfr for a certin type of fluid. So yea if it said no syn then it might cause a chatter! I deal with this in heavy eqiupment. Its the friction modifiers in the oil matching up with the material in the friction discs. Might want to put the recomended oil in there and zip tie the cluth lever to the grip to open up the plates and let it sit for a day or two. Just a thought.
