Primary/Transmission/Driveline/ClutchFind answers to general powertrain, primary and transmission. Have clutch issues and need suggestions? Post them here.
I have an '07 Dyna and I have trouble sometimes when downshifting from 2nd gear to 1st gear. When I push the shifter down, it just moves freely and doesn't engage to downshift. My friend has an '07 Electra Glide that sometimes does the same thing. Has anybody else had this problem with the new transmissions? Is it easy to fix?
Mine's an '07 and I think it does the same thing. I just figured it was my error for not putting enough pressure on the shifter when I downshifted. Or that it was just a Harley quirk. Of course, this is my first Harley, so what do I know?
I've had two Harleys before this one, an '03 and an '04, both softails and I've never had this problem. I checked my clutch cable and I have the correct freeplay according to the service manual but maybe there is another adjustment, maybe internal that needs to be done. It's just weird that my buddy and I both have '07s and it happened to both of us.
Maybe a simple answer................... I found mine did the same thing when I don't remove my foot completely from the shift lever to let it return completely to the top to re-engage.

I tend to agree with iowacruiser; This has happened on my last two HDs, both with forward controls. Sometimes need to consider human error...
Hey Iowa - 82 today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Got a little wet yesterday but logged about 200 miles.
You guys may be right. I put Kuryakyn extended forward controls on it, (I'm 6'5") and there is an o-ring behind the shift lever that is might be keeping the lever from coming all the way up. I'll have to see if that is the problem on my next ride. 80's in Iowa huh? Lucky you!!!
