For those in the know....A group will be touring the area August 17. We don't care where we base camp (ok hotels) out of but would like to be somewhere in the middle and head out for daily rides coming back to the same place at night. Can anyone recommend a place or area to stay with good drink (craft beer yum) and food in walking distance after the ride?
I suggest Lake Placid. Art Devlin Motel is in town and lots of fun places to walk to. In the heart of great riding. Check out the top of Whiteface Mtn!!!!!
Hampton Inn right in the center of Lake Placid with the Lake Placid Brewery right next door. Allows for walking rather than riding if one decides to have "extra" craft. Good riding all over the area. I agree with Grousehunter to pick a nice day to ride to the top of Whiteface and climb the very short distance to the summit. A nice short hike with great views etc. County Roads are excellent for exploration but you never know which ones might be a bit rough. For the most part they are great rides.
Spend the nights in New York's Lake Placid, Lake George and Burlington, VT.
Lake Placid's Steak and Seafood Restaurant's got Craft Beer. Lake George's Lobster Pot got good food and Burlington's Church Street Marketplace's got several restaurants to choose from.
Tons of great riding roads up in the Adirondacks. Be sure to stop at High Falls Gorge just North of Lake Placid, Ausable Chasm South of Plattsburgh, also stop at Vermont's VT 108 (No Center Stripes) between Smuggler's Notch and Stowe Ski Resorts to walk around, browse and enjoy the awesome views.
Another vote for Lake Placid. I went up there when I was 21 & rode the Olympic bobsled track with my dad. If I remember correctly, it was approximately $30/ea for 90 exhilarating seconds. To this day, it is one of the coolest things I've ever done. If you're heading up when it's still cold, I strongly recommend doing that. It's something you'll never forget, plus you get a tshirt, which I still have!
Lots of small breweries in the 'daks, lots of good food. My Dad's got a hunting/fishing cabin in Long Lake, NY. The whole area is just pristine...
This post is really making me nostalgic about my home state.
