I use a mix of Butler maps, the free maps provided by AAA, and prints of google maps. My bike has GPS, and it's helpful for getting to a specific address, but I prefer to do my trip planning on paper.
Whats your thoughts about the Butlers? do they provide enough detail to help you choose a scenic route or are they just glorified city maps....Btw, as mentioned above most states will provide maps just by logging in the DOT websites...nice addition...but would like to supplement some good MC maps that highlight specific rides...I have a zumo - hate it. THANKS

I bought my first Butler for my planned trip to the Ozarks, to pick routes to ride while there. I was very pleased with it. It has lots of detail and rates roads in 3 categories, which essentially boil down to good, better, best, that they highlight on the map with color coded highlights. I assume they are all done the same way, but can only speak to the Ozark map. And I can't say whether I agree with their rating system until I test it out this summer. But assuming their recommendations are reliable, the map itself is easy to use and helpful.

Butler maps are made for and by motorcycle riders. They show, rate and describe scenic and twisty roads, including elevation changes and road surfaces. They have no information on city streets.
About every other year I send email requests to the Department of Transportation of all 48 lower states and request an official state road map. Sometimes ya gotta drill down through their website to find where you can request a map.
Ive done 30 states and 6 provinces and have the whole set of Butler maps. My vacation rides are worth a lot to me; far more than the price of a Butler map...and Butler simply delivers the best motorcycle roads.
I don't know how true it is, but was told to get truck driver maps, to get the best route around major cities, to avoid traffic jams and city driving, just thought iI' run that by you all, supposedly better details, maybe someone can comfirm ?
