Default Physical Maps vs. GPS

I prefer physical hard copy maps and atlas vs. GPS. I feel like you get a better feel for the lay of the land using old school paper maps. What do you think?

Maps are a bit more difficult to use at speed. Yeah, ya get a better big picture for overall planning. But, I prefer GPS in real time...plus it doesn’t get blown away.

I've always carried a small atlas, always liked looking at maps.

I pour over maps, and satellite view for PLANNING..... but I load up the route into the GPS, so I can enjoy the ride, and not spend time trying to remember where/when I need to turn.
very helpful on long distance road trips

I've found the Butler maps useful for mapping out a ride or adventure.

You are right about remembering turns, have had to stop many times to double check, but mainly because I have the memory of a smurf.

yeah, smurfish memory here as well. I do a bit of both. For sure, planning with a map or atlas. Hard to get an idea of roads on a gps or program...o, scuse me, app.... when you zoom out and all the little fun backroads disappear.

Last year in North Carolina. I can use my phone, said the kid. No service was the norm all out around Fontana and the dragon as well as Cherohala. Good thing I had a map. Try to keep a map and a compass, even though I am pretty good with direction. Guess I am old

Maps for planning..... GPS and voice prompts for congested areas when I need to the keep my eyes on the traffic. But often I will go off-Route just for the hell of it.

For those of you using GPS, which one do you recommend?
