I'd love to ride from Baja California to Laredo thru northern Mexico. Looking at gov Travel Advisory I'm getting an impression this is a VeryBadIdea(TM).
Has anyone actually been there, riding a bike with US license plate, alone?
While bad news makes for headlines and generates ad revenue, lots of folks do travel to Mexico. Outside of the tourist areas, that are protected for the revenue stream, issues are hit or miss.
Some folks have traveled for years in Mexico. A couple experienced major issues (RV, motorcycle and all IDs were taken from them) and then left them on a deserted road.
I have friends that used to have timeshares on golf courses in Northern Mexico and drove there for years without issues. In 2010, maybe 2011, they experienced kidnapping off of the golf course. Held for ransom for a few days and then they were released after cash payment was made. They no longer travel to Mexico.
My Mexican friends in LA, in 2010, said they would not take me and my wife to Mexico because it was too dangerous. They were bringing they family up to LA instead. I am 6'7" and do not blend in well at all. There was a huge territorial fight going on for control of the various regions. I hear it is not any better now.
The guys from Biltwell host the El Diablo run every two years, seems like it would be a lot safer in a group. I would love to do it, I wanted to ride all the way to Cabo, but sadly I don't think it will happen in my lifetime due to the nature of Mexico. Good luck.
