Default Lake Tahoe from LA

I am new to California and want to ride up to Lake Tahoe from California. Can anyone give me suggestions as to which route I should take for the best ride? Where to stay? Things to do? Side roads to take, ect???

Also what time of year does it start to get cold there where I will need my leathers?

Thanks!

Lots of riders heading that way for Street Vibrations. Just came back from the Pacific Rally in Mammoth Lakes. Some went on to Tahoe but starting to get wet and cold this weekend.Might have some good weather before the cold and wet sets in soon. 395 is a great ride up along the eastern sierras. Very warm during the summer. Nice now. Tahoe area I think will be getting chilly soon (and is this coming weekend)
Do a search and read about Reno Street Vibrations and they talk of the areas/rodes and ridesup there that are great.

I've done that ride before.

If you ride up to Tahoe at this time of the year, you'll need leathers in the Tahoe area.

I'd recommend riding up to Fresno (via slab), and then take the following...

1. Hwy 41 north to Oakhurst
2. Hwy 49 north to Jackson
3. Hwy 88 east to Hwy 89
4. Hwy 89 into Lake Tahoe

If you got an extra day to spend, then do this instead...

1. Hwy 41 north into Yosemite to Hwy 140
2. Hwy 140 to Hwy 120
3. Hwy 120 to Hwy 49 (town of Moccasin)
4. Hwy 49 north to Jackson
5. Hwy 88 east to Hwy 89
6. Hwy 89 into Lake Tahoe

I recommend staying overnight in Oakhurst (on Hwy 41). Then head off from there. If you do the first route, you can make it to Lake Tahoe early evening. If you do the second route, find a place to stay overnight in Angels Camp (on Hwy 49).
