So the wife and I are planning a trip next summer to Laughlin, the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Petrified Forest, Meteor Crater, andpossibly Four Points, also gonna try Route 66[sm=biker2.gif].Any suggestionssuch as food, lodging, party spots[sm=partyparty.gif] and sights to see, please fill me in. We'd like to go sooner buthave to wait till the wife gets her summer vacation. [sm=feedback.gif]Thanks for the input. Tim
Between Sedona and Flagstaff lies Oak Creek Canyon. It's a great ride. I would try find lodging right in the canyon for an overnight. There are also campgrounds. Either way it's one of the nicest roads/drives in the state.
Warning...Laughlin in the summer is just damn unpleasant! The Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, Sedona and the like are higher in elevation and not quite so unbearable.
Thanks for the info. The Laughlin thing is just a layover for a couple days. Not planning on spending anytime on the road there, mostly casinos and buffets. Where we live it's pretty hot during the summer, kinda used to it. Thanks for the warning though. I'll definitely check out the Oak Creek Canyon. we're really looking forward to this trip, can't wait. Thanks again guys[sm=icon_cheers.gif]
IT'S NICE STAY IN WILLIAMS JUST BELOW THE SOUTH ENTRANCE TO THE GRAND CANYON. IF YOU LEAVE WILLIAMS IN THE MORNING YOU'LL BE UP TO THE PARK ENTRANCE WITHIN 40 MIN. GO STRAIGHT AFTER GOING THRU THE GATES TO THE VIEW POINT. AFTER YOU FINISH THERE HEAD EAST ALONG THE RIM AND YOU CAN STOP AT THE LAST VIEW POINT.(TOWER) AND LOOK BACK AT THE PLACE YOU JUST WERE. YOU CAN THEN TAKE 89 NORTH AROUND TO ESCALANTE AND BRYCE CANYON ON THE NORTH RIM....GO WEST THRU ZION NATIONAL PARK AND INTO VEGAS. DO THE HOOVER DAM IF YOU LIKE AND BACK SOUTH.
FROM THE TOWER YOU CAN ALSO HEAD NORTHEAST ON 160 THRU MONUMENT VALLEY....
IF YOU HAVE A BIT OF TIME TO RUN IN SOUTHERN UTAH AND COLORADO I CAN GIVE YOU A COUPLE OF
"MUST RIDES" IN THOSE AREAS.
IT'S NOT THE DESTINATION........IT'S ALWAYS THE JOURNEY!
Ditto onthe Oak Creek Canyon ride...definitely top-notch! If you make it over to Williams, there is a great little restaurant we stopped at for breakfast called The Pine Country Restaurant. Awesome breakfast and tons of homemade pies!!! Since you plan on hitting Sedona, I would suggest you keep going on 89A and visit the town of Jerome. Cool old mining town on the side of a mountain...lots of tight switchbacks. Stop for a burger at Haunted Hamburger...nice outdoor seating deck with a spectacular view. In the Flagstaff area, a few points of interest are Sunset Crater, Walnut Canyon, and Wupatki National Monument. Definitely make time to do the ride to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon...aside from being a nice ride in itself, it's much less crowded and prettier (IMO) than the South Rim.
Me and my buddies I ride with did this same ride about 4 years ago. We Loved it. The only thing we did't like and didn't know much about was route 66. We wanted to ride it but there isn't much left of it. So I would get a map and try to find out what parts you can or can't ride of it. And we rode out to the four coners through Colorado and there is not much of anything out there (hotels or gas) so if you see a gas station you better stop. Hope you have a good trip........
I think if you're gonna be in the Laughlin area at all..........you MUST take 66 up through Oatman! This is one of the very best places I've ever seen anywhere in the world! Wooden sidewalks, "wild" burros wandering Main st (rt 66), biker friendly............noon time shootouts...........very scenic........we loved it! Even thought about moving to the area.
