Thinking about doing the PCH this late spring/early summer on my 05 FLTRi, anyone out there done it??? Have to ship bike from Southern Florida and was thinking I would start in Santa Barbara, maybe try to make Seattle in about 2 weeks?
I did it in 94. Rode from Illinois (Don't ship your bike man, ride it) To Marino Del Ray (spelling?) and then up the coast. If you start in Santa Barbara make sure you ride your bike out onto the pier and get some seafood at the little restaurant. That was a great experience. I camped at Big Sur along the way. Great trip. I'd like to do it again.
two week is more than enough time however
stopping in frisco to do the tourist thing takes time
the calif. wine country takes some time
the redwoods is a must stop
take a day and ride the river boats on the rouge river
now the oregon coast
the museum at port orford
the harley shop at coos bay and the casino
depoe bay
how about the sea lion caves
should be a great trip check out some of the thing i mentioned and enjoy yourself
I did a X-country trip in '01 from Ct. to Cali. and back (21 states total) We managed to take in the Coast Highway from Monterey down to about Cambria and back north staying near San Jose. Unfortunately I was laid up for 2 full days after the days ride due to a serious bout with bronchiatis but had plenty of sweet dreams about the experience. Photo oppty. abound, ya get quite the breeze off the Pacific and honest truth had to HOLD my FLHR windshield quite a bit to keep it from blowing back to Nevada. To me, the highlight was either the first glimps of the rocky coast and the area near the Bixby Bridge. Big Sur State Pk. has the big trees up close, I think Redwoods. Wish we had MORE time, we had great weather for 15 of the 17 days and 10,700 plus miles. We all tried to do so much in such a short time-and this was one spot we could KICK ourselves in the *** for not having more time put aside. Your 2 weeks concentrated along the coast should be terrific! Enjoy.
up here in wa there is a chance of rain in early July, but down in southern or you'd have a clearer chance of sun. don't miss those sea lion caves, there's some nice scenery
Roadglide88 I live out here - I would ride the PCH later in the year like sept. In the summer you have a tendency for fog and thick fog which can hug the coast for days. And it can be really windy as well - i.e. a stiff north west wind through June. It will be 90 degrees and hot as a pistol 10 miles inland but 50 and drizzle rain on the coast. Make you are aware of that and have a different inland route so you can get some sun. Now there are really nice days in the summer along the coast but you can rely on them later in the season. For example here in the Bay area some of the best weather is in October - it can be cold and foggy all summer in SF and down to at least Monterrey.
Not trying to bum you out, but I would hate to see you caught up in the fog and wind for 800 miles.
I'll just add to check out Jed Smith state park just 4 miles off 101 at Crescent City Ca. just South of the Oregon border.
Walk the foot bridge accross the river into "Stout Grove" for some of the best of the Redwoods.
Be prepared for rain and wind and sunny and 80 degs in Norcal ,Oregon and Washington,it's always a crap shoot up here.
