Default Petrified Forest National Park

My brother called me about two weeks ago and said, now that I have loaned you most of my extra cold weather gear, how about we plan a short road trip with the wife’s? Although we live in sunny Arizona, We are on the East side up in the White Mountains about 6,000 feet and have had some good snow storms in the last few months. So I checked the weather, it looked good, and the trip was on, scheduled for the 18th.

The plan was to checkout the Arizona Petrified Forest National Park. About a 200 mile round trip, not long but considering the wife’s and a lot of starts and stops to checking out the park exhibits, it sounded great to get us back in shape for the upcoming riding season.

At the last minute my wife had a back issue and didn’t feel it in her best interest to go, this time around. My Brothers wife had concerns about getting cold so 3 layers plus heated gear and armored pants and jacket, she was ready, kind of looked like if she fell of the bike she would have bounced about half way there.

Monday morning the 18th we get a far start after a few delays mostly getting all the gear on my brother’s wife and we’re off. About an hour later we make a quick stop in Holbrook for a bite to eat and then just South of Holbrook we pick up I80 East (20 miles) to the park entrance.

So ... if the wife didn't go ... then who was wearing that second helmet on your backseat?

Doc-cj,

That one would be mine. The lady in the same photo is my brother’s wife, as you can see, very ready for some cold weather andit did get a little cold
A note: the petro glyph as seen in one of the photos is estimated tobesome 1,500 to 2,000 years old.

OOOPS ... .... like you said, she was sure bundled up.

Glad you posted the pics, though. We're planning our first trip of the year for March 17-19, I think. We plan to head from southern Utah to Sedona. Not sure if we'll come back by going east to Petrified Forest then north back through the Navajo Nation, Page, and home or if we'll go west through Lake Havasu City and around through Las Vegas. Both rides should be fun ... glad you had a good trip.

Doc-cj,
It was fun for a short ride but you need a day or two too really see the park. The stop and go gets to the old legs.

Sounds like you have a good one planed, as spring is coming I’m looking at a ride to Prescott and/or Sedona as well. Oak Creek Canyon between Sedona and Flagstaff is awesome, it’s voted one of the top ten roads in America. For you, coming out of Cedar City anywhere you go would be a great ride, love that country. I have been looking at the Zion National Forest area, have you been through there? If so, how are the roads?

Zion is gonna be cold for the next week or so. Highs in the low 40s through probably Wednesday and then maybe warm up to higher 40s with chance of 50 on Friday/Saturday. Still colder north, especially at elevation. Around Cedar we're hitting 30s/40s with some snow showers predicted and snow at 6000 feet and above. The St George area is warmer, but it's not by a lot, maybe mid-50s for the week. Roads are not bad, but the winter weather is still hanging on so be careful and bundle up if you try it in the next week or so.

Thanks Doc, but I think I will wait until it warms a little more. From what I have seen it looks like a nice ride.
