I'm planning my cross-country for June, '07. I'm leaving from eastern N.C. and I am not concerned with anything in the northeast or southeast U.S. as I'll use that as separate trips. Once I exit Tenn. on I-40 I'll be looking to get off the slab and start enjoying my trip. Any travelers have suggestions for mid to northern Arkansas, southern Oklahoma, the panhandle of Texas, into New Mexico.
On the return side, any suggestions coming out of South Dakota into Iowa and down into Missouri and southern Illinois. I have a lot already highlighted on a road atlas but will welcome suggestions on basically anything from the midwest to the west. This trip will be a once-in-a-lifetime so I want to hit as much as possible. I will be retired so time is not a problem. Thanks for any help.
I could be of no help to you on the trip out from your start point. However, once you get out west I would strongly consider the states of Colorado and Montana as CANT MISS. Used to live in Montana. Seems like your planning on turning north in New Mexico, heading into South Dakota? If Colorado is doable, consider Hgwy550 from Durango (Million dollar hgwy) to Montrose. Black Canyon of the Gunnison..Hgwy 50 East and head north on Hgwy24 to Leadville. A really awesome sidetrip from Leadvile is 82 west to asapen taking you over Independance Pass. North of I-70 Rocky Mtn. Natl. Park, including any roads in and out, is spectacular. One road that sticks in my mind is through Thompsons Canyon between Loveland and Estes Park Co.

All of what RoadGlidin said is very true! The stretch above sticks out in my mind too. As I recall, it winds along parallelling a winding creek/river. It is aboslutely awesome!
Thanks Roadglidin and PhilM. At this point, nothing is out-of-the-question. I'm sure when the trip is all organized, something will be pared away. I'll be going into Arizona and then California. I have a friend to visit in Pasadena and then up the Cali and Oregon coast turning east probably(?) at the Columbia River Valley. I vacationed in Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana years back and plan on hitting the highway through Glacier Park which I missed the first time and the BearTooth Parkway.
