New to road trips.
I set up my tent once after a long day in the saddle in pitch black on what I thought was the best level ground - it wasn't - it was on an incline and on a tree root. Needless to say crappy sleeping.
Woke up the next morning only to find out I picked possibly the worst spot at the site to set up, and I had another long day of riding ahead of me.
Rest is very important for alert efficient riding.
I've done what you're planning every year for the last 10 - no real destinations - just ride where the road takes me. Some of the best memories of my life. Found places i couldn't plan for and views/experiences I'll never forget.
I finally have a GPS which has taken a little bit of the nervous uncertainty out of the "where the hell am I" as darkness approaches. Also good for gas - I've traveled miles out of my way to get gas when I didn't need to before i got it.
Great tips from all above - but no matter what, you'll do things differently on your "second" trip!
For what it's worth - usually National and State parks are consistently the best camping.
Have a blast and don't hesitate to go see/do something that interest you on the way - just for the hell of it! It may end up being a "time of your life" experience!
