Could someone give me some advice on a trip from Houlton Maine into New Hampshire around the White Mountains area. Would like to stay off the I-95 most of the time. Would also like info on where to stay...cabins, motels nothing to fancy just a bed an a bathroom. I would also have to stop at Conway Harley Davidson and Littleton Harley Davidson at the very least. I will be leaving from New Brunswick, Canada going through Houlton Maine actually. I have been through Maine in a cage before and into Boston and I drove from Caribou to Houlton on my bike this past summer. I have also looked over some maps but your help would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to put together a weekend thing for sure maybe 3-4 days.
I can help you with the NEW HAMPSHIRE White Mtns part specifically. Have friends who own a clean & inexpensive motorlodge at the west side of the Kancamagus in N.Woodstock. Biker friendly and covered porch for the bike too.
Thanks roadglidin...that's great. What's the name of the Motorlodge? I will look the place up on Mapquest. I want to circle the White Mountains if possible. Anything else you can tell me about... things I should do or not miss.
Sure, its called the "Carraige Motel" by the river. Its on Main St., aka Rt. 3 in North Woodstock NH. Dennis and Fran are great people, 1-800-822-7666. Things not to miss: well Im a New Englander so Im partial to our mountains, but for great rides heres a few that are terriffic. For a short (exactly 100 mi. loop) from N. Woodstock go EAST on hgwy 112 (The Kancamagus Hgwy) for 32 mi. until you hit Conway. Merideth Harley has a "boutique store" in North Conway if interested. Take Rt. 16 north thru the Mt. Washington valley up to Glen NH and shoot west on 302. This takes you thru Crawford notch State Park and great views on Mt. Washington. 302 continues back to rt. 3 at Twin Mtn, and head back south. This takes you into Franconia Notch which is awesome. Before the "Old Man" died and crumbled this was the viewing spot of the world renouned "Old Man Of the Mtns." Anyhow, Dennis has plenty of brochures for all the natural scenic wonders in Franconia notch. Just south of the notch is North Woostock again.
Depending on weather (you wanna ride up or not) literally Mt. Washington is a few miles north of Glen NH on Rt 16 and takes you thru Pinkham Notch. there is a really nice waterfalls (Glen Ellis falls) a short hike from 16 along the way. i think the drive up the mountain is about 8mi., during summer it may only be 40's near the top. But the wind is usually 40-50 mph, sometimes WAY OVER 100 mph and for that they wont allow you up on a scooter. There is a weather station at camp base for conditions.
By the way, any road on the map you take in the white mtns will be fun. Ive done them all many times over. Never get tired of them.
Thanks a bunch forum friends....there is some great info here. This is exactly what I would believe this forum would be all about...riders helping riders. I believe there should be even more of this kind of route information on here...bring it on. The way I see is that's why we bought our Harleys so we could head out on the highway to adventure... and what better way to help each other enjoy the ride then to post good information. Roadglidin you made my planed trip sound even better now...I am going to look up the area in greater detail on Mapquest thanks for your friends information. Hi Zombie...that Harley Atlas seems nice...there would be a lot of info in there I believe for the Harley Rider on tour. I though someone on here did mention that there was such an Atlas out there before but it may have been elsewhere I heard that...I do wonder about spending about $50.00 CAD though[:@] if you buy it let me know what you think. You appear to be very happy with your Heritage Classic in your picture Zombie I know I am with mine.
Hey your welcome and glad to be of help. If you stay at Dennis' place youll see my pics from Laconia bike weeks past on the "wall of Fame" in the gameroom. Ask Dennis to see Tom & carol. We hit the White Mtns frequently.
THIS particular forum is by far my favorite on this website. To me its always about the RIDE ya know? Hey one last thing, if you get a chance and have a Waldenbooks, or a Barnes&Noble bookstore around, seek out the travel section and buy the guidebook put out by MOON HANDBOOKS on New Hampshire. www.moon.com Its a pretty detailed guide and has some local maps and nice roads to travel.
