I was looking at the ride to hit the four corners of the US, then figured with a few changes here and there that I could also hit all of the lower 48 states in the process.
Tentative plans to leave in mid June next year and do the 12,000 mile trip in 18 days, with one oil change and one rear tire change. I want to try this as an endurance ride, not a sight seeing trip.
Am I nuts, or has anyone else here made this kind of ride - or wanted to?
In my opinion, the only thing that's nutty is that you're taking only 18 days to do it. That's over 650 miles a day. Take some time to stop & look at some things rather than ride by them at 70 mph! There's alot to see in the country. You oughta take a month to do it, unless you just wanna be able to say that you were in all 48.Sounds like a cool trip, but if I were doin' it, I'd want to look around!
Unfortunately I've still got about 12 years until I can retire, so I'm limited on vacation time as well as funds for the trip - taking three weeks off.
Planning to complete the ride in 18 days but leaving a few extra in case of severe weather or other delays.
I'm really looking at this as an endurance ride, but also a way to see all of the states kind of scouting the areas for future slower trips.
Riding six or seven hundred miles a day doesn't bother me much, I did it earlier this year on a round trip to Florida from Arizona. That's actually what got me thinking about this ride. I had such a great time I didn't want the trip to end.
You are not nuts! I think about this allot. I love to ride and what a better way to rack up the miles. As a matter of fact I am thinking about the same type of trip next year myself. Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, S.Dakota, N.Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington, Oregon are the states I plan on hitting. There are a few roads I have highlighted but mostly just want to travel through these states. Good luck to you and post your trip!
STEVE
just returned yesterday from a 3800 mile trip in 8 days Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, California and back to Arkansas. No your not nuts but take more time to enjoy the sights The three of us missed alot due to our limited time. heading out again in June ride to California pacific coast highway north to Washington state and across the western states.
Have you considered breaking the trip into quadrants, or segments? Do one each summer for the next several years? With your plan, you won't have time to really scope things out. Just my 2 cents.
