If you were going to head from Billings to Gardiner why not cross over the Beartooth and come into Yellowstone at the North east entrance by cook city and loop over to Gardiner through the park.
Wife and I stayed at the yellowstone village inn not the ritz but was a good place to catch some zzz's after a day of riding in the park. The only down side of staying in gardiner is you go through mammoth village and at night there are a lot of elk all over the place and I don't think they like motorcycles too much cause if it were not for a brave shovel wielding ranger a bull elk would have taken us out.

Yeah, I'd imagine a Bull Elk can get kind of protective of its' territory or mate, if given a reason. I've got a halfway decent set of air horn on the bike - Hopefully they'll help, if the need arises.....
not really a positive, but since the wolf introduction and the way they have thrived, there are a LOT less elk than there used to be.an elk calf now stands a 10% chance of surviving to adulthood, and here in the bitterroot valley, elk are at an all time low.
the wolves are thriving though.but that's a topic for r&p.
Zillions of elk in YNP. 99.9% of the elk in Mammoth are cows. If a bull wanders in, as can happen during rut, rangers will form a perimeter and direct traffic. Always rangers on duty watching the elk situation in Mammoth (because of the traffic).
Most of the elk just linger around the tiny geothermal vents there below the hot springs shelf. When bull elk wander into Mammoth, they usually hang around the post office. Dunno why.
I can't believe that I started this thread over 4 months ago and the responses have been great. I got so much information that I may not make it out of my driveway. Thanks for all the help. We leave next Thursday (July 8) and I am sure it is going to be the trip of a lifetime. Thanks for all the posts and I am glad to see that lots of other folks have been able to jump in and get the info they needed. I will update when I get back (if I come back).

Perhaps we'll see you along the way. A couple of guys are coming from Pittsburgh on the 10th, and we're leaving here on the 11th. Another guy is joing us in Denver. From there we're going through Rocky Mountain, working our way into Yellowstone on the 14th, out of there on Chief Joseph and the Beartooths, through North Dakota to Minnesota, then splitting for home.
