Going on 3 months since our last posts, and am just now finalizing my plans for the trip out West. Things on this end kept changing; so it took me a while to get to the point of engraving things in stone. On the way out I've got most of it sorted out; but am still trying to figure out the way back. Am thinking of leaving Billings and then spending a day or two in the Yellowstone & Grand Teton areas - Any thoughts on reasonably priced places to stay (...anything over $100 a night is a wee bit tough to swallow) outside of the Parks; but still within relatively short riding distances for day rides? Am still looking at past posts and places mentioned.... After a couple of days I'll have to start heading back East to keep with my traveling schedule.

Gardiner, MT is probably the cheapest town around the Park. You should be able to find something there for under $100 easily.

To get there, go west on I-90 from Billings about 115 miles. Get off at Livingston and go south on US 89. You'll hit Gardiner just before hitting the Park. The ride down from Livingston through Paradise Valley is one of my favorites around here.

Don't miss the museum in Cody ... also be ready for wild weather. Four of us stayed in Yellowstone on a return from Sturgis to Las Vegas. Arrived at a blamy 78 degrees in YNP. By the time we finished dinner it was high 40s. Woke up to 28 degrees in the early am and we were tent camping. Try breakfast at Bubbas in Jackson Hole if you get there.

I'll get there the evening of the 17th. Sorry to miss the run, but, heck, the best stuff is always in the evenings

If you go through Jackson, just climb to the top of the Pass, west of town. The top has one of the best views I have seen in my entire life. I Promise.

It looks like Gardiner & West Yellowstone are right by the entrances for dealing with Yellowstone, then once I head further south through Grand Teton I can either head out on US-191 or US-287 & there will be reasonably priced motels. Still have "Mom & Pop" places I could check out - So far I've just been looking at the "Name Brand" stuff....

Gardiner and West are very different towns. West is a tourist trap. IMAX theater, taffy shops, curio shops, etc. Some people like that kind of thing. Gardiner is very tourist friendly, but not as schlocky as West, IMO. Quieter, laid back. West has more national chain hotels, but a few mom-n-pop places. Gardiner is mostly mom-n-pop places, with a couple national chains. West is also in a forest, cleared for the town. Gardiner is in a canyon, perched on both sides above the Yellowstone River--the US 89 bridge connects the two halves of town. Elk, antelope and bighorn sheep often wander through town in Gardiner; the occasional bison will wander through West. That ought to give you a sense of what the areas look like.

Mom-n-pop places are scarcer around GTNP. There are some places along US 287 just east of Moran Jct. I just can't recall anything on US 191 from Moran Jct until you get close to Jackson. Maybe a WY local knows better. (I always camp when I'm down there.)

Teton Pass is amazing, isn't it? Can get a bit sketchy in the winter.
