We are planning a trip up to Yellow Stone and the Sturgis area this June.
From what is see there is a lot of places to ride in that area. Is there any one place or more to stay away from or any High way to stay away from up there.

Thanks

I agree. The whole area is beautiful out west. As long as you are riding and enjoying the scenery. Thats all that matters. The Stanley Motel? What does it have to do with Dumb and Dumber. Maybe I missed that part of the movie

The riding is great out here. Trust me.

What do you mean by 'any one place or more to stay away from'? What would you want to avoid? Answer that, and I'll help you avoid it.

We made reservations at Green Creek Inn (Between Cody and YNP) for the middle of July. The prices were not as bad there. Going to say for a few days there and do some loops, just need to relax for a while!!

I will be coming in from the east...probably through Casper. Where would be the best place to stay where I could make most of the rides and stay in one location? ( into yellowstone, beartooth pass, and then maybe exit out through the grand teton's to jackson, back toward Missouri) How many days to see a fair amount of stuff? It will be 3 days there and 3 days home and I have available 11 days. This way I could make reservations and not have to pack up every day. Coming from Mid Missouri. Thanks for any thoughts!

beerun, I hate to tell you this, but the place I would avoid is Yellowstone. All the big city tenderfoots come out in June, July and August and back up traffic for miles every time they see a squirrel.
harleyboy, I would base in Cody. Neat little town, my brother used to live there. If the Proud Cut is still there, it's a good restaurant. If you get to Red Lodge after riding the Beartooth, Bogart's always had good pizza. Cooke City, MT is a neat little mountain town, Cooke City Cafe is where we used to eat.

Cooke City is home to the new breed of mountain hippie: tweakin' and tokin', and making your food They live up there because they are obsessive BC pinheads (backcountry telemark skiers), and the avvy eats a few every winter.

Red Lodge is a cool little town. I go there all times of the year and always end up at the Creek. One of the best bars in MT.

Cody.....yeah. I like Cody. Don't know the bars cuz I always stay with friends. If you see this guy riding a Royal Enfield down main street in his boxers.....give the guy a bag of chips and point him west

As for Yellowstone.......yes, the flatlanders do gum up the roads for every cow-elk. But, it is still something to see. Where else in the US are you going to see those crazy geyser basins and the last wild herd of bison? I bitch about the traffic jams like every other local, but I still wait through them. YNP is mind-blowing.

But, once you're done with YNP and you want to see more of MT and WY, I'd be pleased to suggest all kinds of great rides

Yep, it's worth it. However...a li'l tip...get out EARLY, and you'll get in a LOT of hassle-free riding and sight seeing. We typically headed out about 6:00 - 6:30 each morning...very few folks out that time of day...even in Yellowstone...go figure? Also, keep some drinks and snacks in your saddlebags, and ya can pull over and take a little break when the traffic jams up, and you've already seen enough buffalo to start naming them.

Wink The Early Bird

I've gotta agree with you on that one - When I was out there in 2006, I got up at dawn, having stayed at the Super 8 in Cooke City, had a hot cup of coffee & a muffin, went to get on the bike and noticed it had "snowed" that night (....actually a little bit of hail that collected in all of the low spots, including my bike seat) - And we're talking the middle of JULY! Cleaned the bike off, went back inside, had another hot cup of coffee, then hit the road. Went into Yellowstone and didn't see much of anyone for the first couple of hours I was there. I was absolutely in Heaven, taking in the majestic sights & viewing wildlife at my leisure. Slowly but surely, as the morning went on, the traffic increased. By the time I got around past Yellowstone Lake, I was pretty much getting into traffic jams here and there (...and, yes, folks literally stop in the middle of the road to jump out of their vehicles and take pictures - Or chase after wildlife!), trying to make my way around them only to get stuck in another one, and by the time I worked my way to Old Fairthful, I had pretty much had it with the Yellowstone traffic for the day. All of that being said, I wouldn't have traded the day for the world, and I'll be heading back there this July.
