If you go west of Vernal on 40 about 35 miles turn on hwy 87, go through Altamont and the road will swing south, go to hwy 35. Go west through Tabiona and Hanna and on to Francis.(Francis is just an area with a stop sign and a biker friendly pit stop on the corner.) At Francis go north not very far to Kamas, at Kamas go Right on hwy 150 over Mirror Lake hwy to Evanston WY.
++++ These are two of the best roads you'll ride. Lot's of twists and beautiful mountain scenery. Plus, once you get to Evanston you can continue north on 89 through Star Valley to the Jackson area.
You must be stuck in Billings for a while if you're thinking of day trips to YNP. Why not go the other direction from Billings? Go east in I-94 a ways and see Pompey's Pillar and enjoy a ride in the high plains. Nothing like it.
Whatever your convention is, man, give a little grief to the site selection committee
The Convention is Sunday through Thursday - I'll be arriving late Saturday and departing the following Friday. Conventions are done by bid, so it's whoever makes proposals and then is chosen by the membership if there is more than one proposal. Last year was in Louisville, KY, 2008 in Peoria, IL, 2007 in Milwaukee, WI, 2006 in Vancouver (...actually Surrey), BC (...that's when i was last out West), 2005 in Lafayette, LA (...not that was both hot AND humid! Didn't even feel like riding much when I got down there).... Every year is a different place. Next year will be in Hampton Roads, VA, which will be a "short hop" for me. Was last there (Chesapeake, VA) in 2003 - Talk about another hot & humid place....

If you do take this ride I suggest that you get gas in Roosevelt. You can get gas in Altamont but the premium pump has been known to be out. Tabiona and Hanna has gas but not premium. I would be more than happy to play tour guide. I live five miles west of Altamont and work in Vernal every day.
Looks interesting; but I don't think I can swing it on my present schedule, at least making the stops I was thinking about. From Vernal I was looking at making a straight shot up to Billings. Am still scoping out route options, and could try to make that a return loop; but since I'm on the East Coast it'll take me about 4 days to even got out "West" and another 4 days to get back, so that eats up some of my travel time. So many roads, so little time....
Talk about sticker shock - Rooms were mostly in the $150-250 range! ..
I had the same feeling when I was making my reservations this week. If you want a real kick in the pants. Put in your date for 3 weeks before or after Sturgis and watch the rates go way down. I did this at one motel chain and the rate was cut in 1/2. They jacked the rate up double for the Sturgis rallye.
I have enjoyed reading this thread. Yellowstone is one of my dream rides. I'm making my mental list as I read. I even look on the map a few times to find the roads.

Google Earth is good for that. And you can see some things that you'll never see or detect on some maps.
Before you head out you may want to check with the DOT. I traveled the Beartooth last August and the entire road was loose gravel. At least 2 sections were 1 lane road (and I don't mean 1 lane each way).
Once you finish the Beartooth and CHief Joseph Byway I would like to suggest you head through the Flaming Gorge once you see the Tetons. Head south from Jackson into Idaho past Bear Lake then head towards Green River, WY. Then head south throught the Flaming Gorge and head into Colorado from Vernal, UT. I have taken several trips accross Colorado and my favorite route is 50. I stay in Sailida, Travel Lodge, ~$75. From there you can head to Colorado Springs through Canyon City and see the Royal Gorge. The last time I did this route I left Lyman, WY in the morning and hit Salida about 11PM. If you do not break a shifter and have to stop 3 times to piece it together and once at a shop you should get there a lot earlier. It is a beautiful ride. I am planning on doing that route again this year minus the shifter thing.
Some years back I had my shifter lever break back at the transmission right at the start of a trip. It was too late to hit any of the local shops, so I looked at the pieces, reached into my saddlebag, grabbed some heavy duty cable ties, fit the pieces together and bound them as tight as I could. It worked so well, it was 750 miles & a couple of days later before I started thinking that maybe I should get the thing fixed before it broke at an inopportune time. Picked-up the part I needed and threw it in my saddlebag to work on later, as we had a schedule to keep and people to meet. As it turns out, I finished my trip and never used the part.
Am still scoping out different routes for my trip out West in July. Will mainly be in Billings, MT and also doing some riding through Yellowstone; but really hope to be able to cut South, either on the way there or back, and at least do US-34 & US-40 across CO and the Rockies. So many roads, so little time....
Ya Beartooth Pass was a little gravely in some areas but I didn't think it was to bad. I agree with you going down into Colorado. Beautiful country up in Cooke City and Yellowstone. Went there last year and this year going into Colorado. See what the southern states are like. Make sure and see Eisenhower tunnel, Pikes Peak, Aspen, Breck, Coors Brewery, and a few other highwaysa nd passes I was told. Make the best out of it while you can. You will never catch every road or site to see
