Default Belle Fourche to Billings

Going to be travelling through SD to MT. Is 212 out of
Belle Fourche a good ride to I90 to Billings as an alternative
to I90 all the way?

Thanks, Jim

It's better than I-90. It will cut an hour off your time, too. I always suggest it to people coming to Montana from the east.

US 212 goes through pure eastern Montana. You'll be in the wide open high plains. It's beautiful. You'll see what the real small town West is like in places like Broadus and you'll see what life on the res is like (you'll go through the Northern Cheyenne Reservation). 212 spits you out on I-90 by the Little Bighorn. Stop and check it out if you haven't.

Gas up in Belle Fourche. (****. "bell foosh")

EDIT: I often find myself cruising over 90mph out there. Good road and no traffic. But my wife did get snagged by a MT Hwy Patrol for doing 92mph on her bike just west of Broadus.

Thanks for the info. I'm planning on coming thru Souix City, headin for Rapid City for Sturgis. I will certainly look at US 212. I perfer to stay off the slab as much as possible. Leaving Raleigh, I'm looking at as many routes off the slab as I have time for.

Taking US 212 from Belle Fourche to Crow Agency, MT is if you want to go *west* of Sturgis. Sounds like you are coming from the east.

Still lots of good two-lane from Sioux Falls. Once you cross the Missouri River in SD (which is like crossing from the Midwest to the West), try US 18. You can take I-25 south from Sioux Falls a bit and pick it up. It goes through some nice farm country, then crosses the Missouri at a dam (forget name). After that, it's the wide open west. Ranch country. You'll also go through some Indian Country. The side trip to Wounded Knee is worth it, IMO. You'll also see some badlands.

Eventually you'll hit US 385. Take that north into the Black Hills. Lots of potential side trips there. Very scenic ride. WInd Cave NP is nice, and often overlooked by the Sturgis set.

I rode the 212 out of Belle Fourche last summer. Once you get spit out onto the I-90 and your riding towards Billings take the Old Us 87 or Hardin Road as it's called. It will take you into Billings also but it's a lot more fun than the I-90. Lot's of twisty's and banked curves as you get closer to Billings, do it, you won't be sorry.
Google it.

Thanks, I made a note of it, I'll be going to the Airport
when I get to Billings (to pick up a passenger) looks like
87 will bring me out right there.

West of the airport find a place to pull off the road on the south, walk over and sit on the edge of the rims. It's a beautiful view of Billings.

Good idea. Lots of places to site on the Rimrock and see the city and the Yellowstone.

If you have some time to explore downtown Billings, check out the Golden Triangle of brewpubs: Montana Brewing, Carter's (in the old depot), and Angry Hank's.
