I'm leaving this Thursday from Toledo Ohio going to the Museum. In looking at the Harley map, instead of route 94 through Chicago, I saw route 41 runs next to it. Not sure if this is a good idea to take 41 especially if its a 2 lane with lots of stop lights. Anyone have a suggestion on a route through Chicago?
If you have the time I would look at staying completely out of Chicago. Between road condition and traffic it is worth extra time to go around maybe even as far as Rockford then come north.
Route 41 is expressway (limited access) from I94 (kennedy expressway) to Park avenue in Highland Park. From there only a few stoplights to Wisconsin where it joins up with I94 again. It is a good road for bikers. Depending on the time of day it will be wide open or stop and go even on the expressway. Chicago rush hour is the worst. There is considerable construction around the airport in Milwaukee.
If you are coming from the east, it is tough getting past Chicago. Wish I had better news.
When we rode to the 105th from Michigan we took 94 all the way around. Traffic was busy but was not stop n go by any means, actually buzzed along faster n hell. LIke was said, coming from the east, good luck. Here's a suggestion. Ride on up to Muskegon Mich and take the ferry across the big lake. 2 1/2 hrs across, takes you right into Milwaukee. Take 23 up to 96, then turn left. Follow the signs.
We've done that before too. Was a great ferry ride, very relaxing.

You have to take 94 north into Chicago and through it to get to 41 to then head north to Wisconsin. One advantage of taking 41 North out of Chicago is to miss the toll booths on 294. We go to Chicago often to see the Cubs and White Sox. We always take 41 into the city instead of going around using 294. 41 really doesn't have that many stop lights and it's not all 2 lane. It can be much quicker sometimes. 41 basically turns back into 94 anyway.
If you're talking about coming out of Toledo into Gary and taking 41 all the way north from there, ... that could be a long ride.
