Me and the wife (her riding her own) are planning 5000 miles in 3 weeks up through SD, to Salt Lake to Vegas by the big dam, through Flagstaff on over to Louisville then home. Spending a few days here and there but am eagerly looking forward to it. Riding solo like that will be great!

Dang! I can't imagine no windshield on a RK...thought I'd hit the town a few months ago just to get the knees in the breeze. Wanting to look particularly "cool" that day...I removed my shield. Was fine with it on the side streets. THEN...I got on the freeway. Felt like a human parachute! Couldn't get off the freeway soon enough!
I can't decide whether or not you guys that run w/o windshields are either nutty or just have ***** as big as church bells!

Hey, Monstead, I enjoyed your 2 videos on Vimeo. Great trips and nicely put together, too. I'm jealous.
Thanks Deuce...I loved the riding and when I get an itch...I torture myself by watching them myself. I also toruture myself by reading stories here and also on the ADVrider forum. Took 1 big bike trip this year, but for some stupid reason, took no video and almost zero pics. Could shoot myself for that. Oh well. Would've loved to have a video of that one.
Your day will come...hang in there and enjoy those kiddos. My younger brother is in the same boat as you. 3 boys - 5, 9 and 12...He loves to ride and I know fantasizes about taking off on his bike....I can hear it in his tone when he talks about it. My older brother (whose boys are grown) and I just got BMW R1200 GS's and will probably do at least 1 trip a year together on them...little bro had one but got rid of it because he just wasn't riding it enough...Kept his Ultra though...& rides whenever he can. When I called him to ask questions about the GS...I could hear the jealously...made me feel bad for him (even though he was a big, fat, bratty pain in my keester growing up ) Of course...I'm super envious of his family...I don't have kids and would've loved them. Despite my "freedom"...he's definitely got the better end of the stick.
I admit I didn't read all the posts, a few years back I did solo from Seattle to Minneapolis to Santa Fe to San Diego back up the coast to Seattle. Took a month, rode some of the legs with other solo riders. Had a blast, no rules.

I just never used it for years...
Then in September of '09 I was meeting friends in Estes Park, CO and leaving there to move to PA. I figured it was easier to mount the windshield on the bike than to pack it for the move. After riding from Vegas to CO, the CO to PA (which included a first leg of 1000 miles, Estes Park to Joliet, IL) I realized that riding with the glass on didn't really suck AT ALL!!!!
Bell-sized-***** aside, the windshield hasn't been off the bike since!
