I would like to ride thru NY along Route 3 into Plattsburgh and then thru Vermont and New Hampshire to either the Maine coast or Massachusetts, July, August maybe. Checking mapquest and Plattsburgh, there is a note about a bridge being closed. I recall a ferry accross lake Champlain, about a 20 min ride. Is that ferry still an option? Any suggestions for a scenic route thru Vermont and New Hampshire? Must see places on Maine coast?
It is hard to go wrong riding in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
Most folks enjoy riding the Kancamangus Highway (Rt 112) in NH but don't rush through Vermont. I rode from PA to Central Maine last summer and went up through Albany, over to Bennington, VT, then up to Woodstock, VT and then cut over to the Kancamangus. I just kept to two-lane state roads and it was a beautiful ride. From the the Kancamangus you can cut over to the Maine Coast.
Definitely do not miss the Kancamangus Highway. If I recall correctly, it starts in Lincoln, NH on the west end, and comes out real close to North Conway.

Route 9 to Plattsburgh skirting the Adirondack Mountains on the way, take ferry across Lake Champlain to South Hero. Must ride Vermont 100, ride through Buel's Gore, see Stowe. July/August will be perfect.

I can't seem to find Rt 9 on my map. I want to spend a couple of days in the Thousand Islands, so dropping down to Watertown and taking Rt 3 is a good option. I also haven't thought out a way home (Detroit).
Route 9 runs north & south over near Albany. You'll have a nicer ride by taking route 3 out of Watertown, toward the Lake Placid area. There's a ferry across Lake Champlain, at Fort Ticonderoga, into VT. Then you'll be in upstate VT & don't have to mess with Albany traffic. When you get to Lake Placid, make sure you ask how to get to Whiteface Mountain. That's where all the olympic ski events are held, and there's a gondola ride to the top. A few of us did it last fall.
You may want to take a more southern route. Going along that section of the Seaway Trail will be BORING, mostly large farms. I suggest take Rte 104 out of Rochester to Oswego then to rte 81 north to rte 3 to Lake Placid. Placid has many thing to see and rte 3 is pretty nice riding. Ride to the top of Whiteface Mtn, or walk to the top of the ski jumps. They ski jump almost every weekend. Head over to Champlain and take one of the free ferries across to Vt. Then north to Burlington then jump on 89 south to Rte 2 and head east thru VT & NH to Bethel Me. then south on 26 to Portland. When in Portland take the Casco Bay Ferry ride around Portland very interesting. Check out Perkins Cove in Ogunnquitt Me special place
