We started from idahio falls, ID. Takng I20 north to island park, and turning off towards ennis. Once we got to montana the speed limits really picked up. Last year we went on a road trip to OR and 55mph just kills. It was nice to take two lane roads and be able to cruise at 70mph. Weather was perfect!
We stopped in Ennis for gas, and decided to head into Virginia city, since we made better time than anticipated due to the higher speed limits. Virginia city is a really cool mining town with a lot of history. One good stop to recommend is bobs cafe. They make their own bread, and lots of other cool food, including a mean Italian sandwich and a great ruben. We highly recommend it should you ever get to Virginia city!
Leaving Virginia city we headed for our hotel mostly just to drop off our stuff in preparation to go to Lewis and Clark caverns state park. Lewis and Clark state park is a must do if you are in this part of Montana. great caves and a hell of a hike to the entrance but well worth it.
There is Almost no place to eat in Whitehall Montana, but if you are starving you could try the two bit saloon, good honest burgers, and cute wait staff!
Montana is about the best place in the country for riding
Yeah, there isn't much in Whitehall. In MT, you just can't ride into a town and expect it to be full service. If you're ever back that way, eat at the Reel Decoy in Ennis--great western BBQ, about as real as it gets.
The Bozeman-Three Forks-Norris-Ennis-Island Park-West Yellowstone-Big Sky-Bozeman loop is my favorite Sunday afternoon ride. Did you learn about the history of VC? In the vigilante days, it was one of the most violent places in the old west. The ice cream place there is a popular stop these days.
Love to see some pics of the cute waitresses in Whitehall
Day 2 late start because my son left his sweat shirt at the A&W, needless to say it is lost forever. We decided to get Breakfast in Butte turns out downtown is under construction and all of the main street is a dirt road, breakfast was at 4B's I had the matador breakfast I recommend that if you go there you order something else. We took 90west to highway 12 which put us on the back roads to the 83 which will take us on to Glacier park.
Stopped for lunch right now at a great place in Seely lake called "The chicken coop". Fresh chicken I have high expectations!
The chicken coup was a winner highly recommended fresh chicken never frozen and the price is right, uneventful ride to Whitefish, Great backroads beautiful part of the country, had dinner at the "shak" and ordered this monster platter of food including 1 rack of ribs,1lb of brisket, 1 whole fried chicken,4 fried corn on the cobs a large side of beans and a large side of Cole slaw! My two boysand I put a dent in it but that was a lot of food!
Day three we are in whitefish which is just a quick jaunt from Glacier National park. Entrance fees for bikes are $12. The park is amazing the vistas are spetacular. There is still a lot of snow and of course a lot of runoff creating waterfalls almost in the road. Unfortunately construction makes the drive on the highway to the sun a little long. I have nothing positive to sy about the food in the park, but in Whitefish there is a Mexican place called Pescado Blanco, which brings Mexican food to a whole new level. If you like the heat then this place can bring it, just try the camarones a la diabla
Pics to follow......
