Nothing in the area is going to be cheap as the entire area is considered a resort area. I'm up that way frequently and have found nothing I would consider cheap. We stay at North Woods lodge a couple of time a year. $80-$100. The closer you get to TC the more expensive it gets.

Honor Motel in Honor Mi about 25 miles west of Traverse city on M31. Mom and Pop motel very clean around $75.00 a night. I stayed there in June on our way to the UP crossed the bridge and UP on way to WI.
