group of us are heading down The Great River Rd from Mn to Dubuque Ia memorialk weekend and we are staying in Dubuque sat and sun here what I need help with!!WE will be heading down to JP cycle sun to look around and something to ride to then heading to Galena IL can any of you in area give me some pointers oin good roads down that way and maybe some Bars and places to eat that might intrest us?
If you take Blackjack road south (just east of downtown Galena) to 84 south down to Savanna there are some fun curves and some nice open country. Savanna is home to a biker bar called Poopies. Mississippi Palasades State Park is along 84 as well. Just becareful along Blackjack it can have some loose gravel in the corners.
As you enter IA from Minnesnowta grab any Iowa state road and weave and bob your way to Cedar Rapids. Hop on 151 east to JP, there's a hotel next door. Most, if not all state highways up in that area are concrete and in relatively great condition. Most have big sweepers and some hills to transverse. Dubuque is only about 50 miles from JP.
We did the reverse trip last year from IL stopped at Poopies for a great lunch. Overnight with family in Harper's Ferry IA up to Wabasha and down the WI side. You have to stop at City Meat Market in New Albin, IA, right at IA/MN border. Small grocery where the jerky is absolutely amazing and worth the stop! Off Shore Bar & Grill in Bellevue,IA with an absolutely amazing view and huge deck area right on the river. We may do it again this year and try some different places.
I get over that way quite often. Once you get away from the river the roads flatten out some. Hwy 151 is a good road to Anamosa, if not a little boring. Once in Anamosa you definitely want to check out the museum -
A lot of good riding roads in all 4 states. The river road is great on both sides in both Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin with Illinois not as scenic because it doesn't hug the river as much. The road down to Dubuque will take you thru Balltown Ia where Brietbachs Country Dinning is located. This bar has the best buffet bar none and the food off the menu is fantastic.
I just went to the Nat museum last week on the way back from the Torque Fest and it's worth the stop. Hiway 64 will take you to Savannah Ill and it's a very biker friendly town. Go to Poopies if you like Do-rag bikers, The Iron Horse Social Club downtown is a real bar with a bunch of motorcycle collectibles, real antiques and good music. Blackjack Road is one option headed north but I prefer the road that runs above the Missisippi Padisades Park. You get on it just before the Sabula bridge and it takes you north above the river on some great twisties and sweepers. New Diggings Wisconsin is east of Dubuque and is a must stop. On one side of the county highway is Antons Bar and Grill and the other side is The New Digging General Store. Any week-end this place is packed with bikes, muscle cars, jeeps, anything goes. Sunday the New Diggs has bands.
This is just a little of what the area has to offer in riding, Have fun and ride the river.
