Us17
We are planning a E. Coast trip this next summer, anyone ever do US 17 from Savannah North? How is the road, any considerations for detours or special sites? Will be doing the super slab & or US60 from St.Louis MO area into Savannah.
17 is a bit boring in NC in some places...Kind of Blah! I would ride the coastal roads as much as i could...HWY 24, 12 on the Outer Banks then get 17 at VA Border...OK from Myrtle Beach to Jacksonville but then get 24. What are you wanting to see...Coast?...or trees? Look at the map... even google earth, you will see.
Live in Easten NC. Have travled 17 to the VA line and almost all the way to FL. If you have the time break off 17 in Elizabeth City and head to the outer banks. Take it all the way to the end and pick up the ferry. it is worth the time. You can make the whole outer banks in a day if needed. Then once done with the outer banks you will end up in Morehead City area. Nice place there. You would then just have about the 2 hour strecth from Jacksonville to SC. However Wilmington is a nice place to visit as well. The waterfront area is nice, with some good bars and places to eat.
North of Savannah it's 2 lanes with some areas being fast moving, beaufort to Charleston has some 4 lane area and N of Charleston it's 4 lane diveded but not bad.
The area between Sav and Beaufort is considered accident alley by some

Also if you need some ideas of good places to eat or some nice things to see let me know as well.

You can take hwy 58 from Swansboro/ Cape Carteret to Moorehead city and then 70 to 101 to the Minnesott Beach Ferry and cross over, visit Oriental... Quaint little Marina/Fishing town.then make you way towards 17 to Va Beach... or croos on the ferry at Cedar Island to Ocrakoke and ride hwy 12 on the Outer Banks....Make sure if you take the ferry to make reservations at 1-800-345-1665... make reservation as much in advance as you can....There are tons of good places to eat and if you want to stay somewhere nice and inexpensive you can check William & Garland Hotel in Salter Path NC... clean place not too expensive...Familly owned for a long time...William and Peggy Smith own the place...Their son use to work with us. This would be a good place to be and about 1 hour from the Ocracoke ferry early in the AM so you don't have to Rush through the Outer Banks...I use to be on the road for work and rode that part of the state quite a bit...Many good ideas... Oh Topsail and SUfr City are nice also...The freaking seafood on our coast is very good....
